Card upgrade advice

the 9800gt is a ok card ,but you can do much better than that for your money,go to the clearance lines and look for b grde graphics card, there is a gtx260 there for the same price which is twice as fast as the 9800gt,ive also seen ati 4870 for that price aswell on the net some where

I notice it has GDDR3 and I am unsure if this is compatible.

You don't need to worry about that, it has no bearing on the rest of your system.

You need to consider

a) Form factor
Check that you have a PCI-express slot with space for at least a single slot card. If you buy a large dual slot card you need to make sure there is enough space for it on your motherboard and in your case.

b) Power supply
If you buy a more powerful card it will need to be connected directly to the system power supply - usually via a 6-pin PCI-e connector (some powerful graphics cards need two connectors). This may already be the case with your current card.
Check the wattage capacity of you power supply and make sure it meets the requirements of the new card. You can get this information from the product description on most web-stores. You may need molex to PCI-e power connector adapters if your power supply doesn't have them. However these often come with the card. With low power cards like the one you've linked, this won't be an issue.

c) Check your requirements
If you don't play games then there's little point in buying a card that's either expensive, or uses a lot of electrical power, or produces too much heat and noise. If you tell us what you do with your PC, you'll get plenty of good recommendations here :)

Thanks guys I play games now and again but the main objective is using my 1080p HDTV and my monitor at the same time to avoid having to stream to a games console.

I could go for the gtx if it is twice as fast for the same price it makes sense.
