Daughters P.C has Abit NF7.s ver2, athlonxp3200 running xp home.

Currently her gfx card is an old 9800pro, i have an power color x850xt pe card spare.

This afternoon i swapped out the 9800 for the x850, trouble is the machine will not boot, it does post 1 beep, then i get a further beep at approx 1 second intervals.

Put the 9800 back in and the machine boots.

Any ideas as to why would be most appreciated.

Maybe the PSU isn't up to the job of the X850?. Also can you check the X850 in another machine?.

Hi psu should be fine, it is the same psu as in the machine the card came out of.

Unfortunately my newer pc's are only pci-e.

Should add the cards power fan is spinning, so it seems to be getting power.

I'll ask the numpty question .... is the additional power lead connected to the x850 ?

I also had a real hassle with a GPU change recently with my Abit FP-IN9, it refused to boot full stop with a new card but would boot with the old one.

Despite CMOS clears and various reinstalls - reseats of everything it only started to work when I loaded 'Fail Safe Defaults' in the BIOS using the old card, then powered off and installed the new card.... your's may be called something similar.

Only found this out after removing the PSU and lashing it up to my other mainboard to test the card...

Post back your results

Yeh i have reset the cmos a couple of times.

I will disconnect all unnecessary items ie: optical drives extra fans, so as to eliminate the PSU.

A guy on another board had the exact same card/board combo and the same symptoms while trying to upgrade to the same card, turned out to be his psu.

If that's the case it could be related to how the load is distributed accross the PSU. Try using different connectors for the additional GPU power

Update.

I have disconnected all drives and fans and just had the card connected, the problem is still there.

Starting to wonder if the card is borked.
