Cardboard grill cover

Can't say I've seen anyone doing it this winter.

I could probably do with it on my Saxo though. Only ever gets upto the correct temperature in town. Out on proper roads it's stone cold :(.
 
Some old cars came with them as standard. But i'd guess it'd only be Scandinavian cars generally. Not certain on the BMW's but i believe its part of the efficient dynamics where you get this feature. My dads 120D has it.

Sometimes used on landrovers when wading through deep water - stops the radiator matrix getting clogged with dirt, also it prevents water getting to the viscous fan unit on the front of the engine, otherwise the fan would spray water all over the front and top and the engine, leading to the possibility of drowning the engine or the ignition system.
I guess on scandi cars, snow might have the same effect, if we ignore the idea of preventing excessive cooling in winter for the moment.
