Would you guys recommend buying a CPU fan/cooler?

I think I heard somewhere that the ones issued with the CPU's are a load of, well.

They seem pretty cheap to be honest, or is it one of those things that don't really make a huge amount of difference. You all seem to know :P

Oh and also, do you ever take the fan off and check the cpu itself? To make sure the heatsink stuff is doing it's job?
Am I right in saying that it should be kinda chalky looking?

Thanks :)

What cpu do you have?
What are you using your pc for?
Are you planning to overclock?

Please answer these questions so we can answer yours more accurately.

Cheers

Pretty much all aftermarket coolers are much much cooler and quiter, not sure why intel and amd produce such crap for stock.

That is not exactly right.
If you are not overclocking and you own an office PC for simple tasks, there is no need to buy an aftermarket cooler.
That is why I asked for cpu type, what is OP using his PC for and is he planning to overclock.

Well, i'm just starting out, and will most likely do some gaming.

What about the heatsink stuff, does that ever need changing or whatever?

Once the cpu heatsink is installed it is not wise to remove afterwards without re-appling fresh heatsink compound after cleaning the old stuff off.
