What do you guys think?

What areas would you swap out or improve upon?

If your gonna spend that much why not throw in a bluray rewriter? Also do you really need 2 GTX480s? So much overkill and it really rubs it in that I cant even have one! :p (I take it you sold your mac and macbook pro to fund this splurge?)

Hi Guys,

Right the mobo choice was based on color scheme :)

Hey icedbullet, iMac may be going to a mate at work at the end of the month, macbook pro is still available, but havent really pushed selling them as of yet. Only advertised on here and to a couple of people at work.

As for the bluray side of things, would be of no use to me. I have a home server i use for backing up my data and such to and i dont bother with Blu Ray films at present.

12gb of ram is purly for the speed. I find 6gb in windows was a bit sluggish, had seen instances with my previous i7 setup when BC2 and such were using a fair whack of RAM whilst encoding in the background.

Machine will be for gaming 98% of the time. Nothing of importance will be on the SSD any work is on my network.

Will be gaming at 2560x1440 possibly going for a 30" instead for the full 2560x1600

Cheers.

Also thinking of holding out for the Corsair H70 which should be better.

I do have a lot of water cooling gear sat here at the moment, its just i cannot really be arseed with watercooling another case to be honest lol, so may be listing that up in the MM also soon.

Something like this perhaps?

Watercooling it would be the best choice though.

Not bad MR Krugga

Looking to get away from mechanical drives, dont need all the storage space at all on this machine, hence the 256gb ish ssd choice above. Im just after nice and fast loading times for Windows 7 and Games.

Also love the HAF X. Not sure on the CM, havent had a CM case since the old school ATCS cases.

The H70 should be good enough for 4ghz I would hope as i had previously used a H50 and that was ok with my i7 920 with 1.375v through it lol.

Still toying with the 3008, i had a 3007 which i shouldnt have parted with :( canna remember his name but a lad on here got a good deal on it. Excellent screen with next to no input lag. I know the 3011 is due out soon, wonder what that will be like for input lag as i had heard the 3008 can be a bit flakey? Is this still the case with later revisions?

I could be tempted to watercool the CPU again if the H70 really doesnt cut it, as mendtioned previoulsy i have an Apogee GTZ, and a nice EK250 res and other bits and bobs from a previous build i had in the corsair 800d. Im sure i put some pics up in the case forum.

Like the PSU choice, have had previous BeQuiet PSU's and they have been reliable and pretty much silent.

It's not that H70 will limit you, it will require a pair of quiet fans though and won't perform that well even then. Afaik you could get away with two 120.2 radiators in that CM case and watercool both the CPU and the GPUs.

I have no knowledge about future Dell releases, I'm sure 3008 is a cracking screen though.

Would be good if you could reuse that Corsair case too.

Definitely get BeQuiet! over Sapphire PSU. Only the Corsair AX 1200W would compete with it but it's not released yet and does cost a little more.

Also, do not get 12GB RAM if you can live without it. 6GB should be more than enough unless you really do a lot of multitasking. It can potentially limit the overclock too.

How about this SSD - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-058-OC&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=1427

They're suppose to be very good performers.

I would say that if you are gaming 98% of the time that 12gb of ram is a waste. Windows 7 uses roughly 1.6gb of system memory on my comp, and that's with all the gubbins I run on the side. I run 3ds Max, Maya and Mudbox and even with huge numbers of polygons with 6gb it will run relatively well. The only thing that will kill it is a 10 permutation turbosmooth. I selected it by accident =(

*edit* just realised Mr Krugga has said this above me... listen to him! He speaks wisdom!!

I'd want at least 1 extra drive in there purely for all files, programs and the swap file that write to disk a lot. SSDs have a limited number of writes per block, or something along those lines, so to extend its life you need to keep writing to a minimum

Ok bump of an oldish thread.

Still waiting to sell my Mac goodies.

Have arriving tomorrow:

HAF X case
Corsair AX1200 PSU
Corsair H70

Will be buying the other bits at the end of the month, may hold out to see how the ATI 6XXX series cards perform.
