Hi guys,

As things stand, I work for Mitchell's & Butler's head office in central Birmingham... as a database control analyst. I job involves creating EPOS screen layouts, and managing the delivery of food/drink/consumable stock management data.

I got this job having worked for M&B for 3 years as a team leader at a pub local to me.

I'm a qualified manager, I hold a personal licence, and still keep my hand in at the retail end of things by helping out the pub I used to work at when they are short on staff or a duty manager.

Recently, my old area manager has approached and offered me an assistant managers role, at my old pub. He will match my corporate Salery, and I will be allegable for much larger bonus. The only key change is I will be working pushing 50hours versus my usual office based 35.5

Here is the dilema:

My current manager has now offered me a perminant postion at head office. I was seconded from my pub job, but it's now been reviewed, and I can start my new perminant contract ASAP.

He wants my answer tomorrow!

I've no idea what to do. My current job means getting up at 6 everyday, getting a train to Birmingham (£133p/m) and then the same back. The pub I've been offered is all of 5mins walk from my flat.

I think I'm afraid it will look like I've taken a step backwards by going back to retail, and throwing away a chance of staying in an office enviroment. But at the same time, I'd love to be back on my feet, in the nitty gritty, making my own future and earning a bonus that relates to the hard work that I put in.

Any input at all would be hugely appreciated guys :)

How long does it take you to get to work? Take that off the extra hours required and see if you want to do it.

I'd go back to the pub, I've been working in an office for about a year now and it's killing me. I've never felt so unfit and stiff and I'm trying to get out as much as possible.

1 hour each way, daily.

So in effect, thats 10 hours unpaid. So the pub job is only an extra 5 hours a week :)

Not a particularly helpful reply, but do what will make you happiest rather considering what other people think of what you do. :)

That's number 1 in my prioritys, but other people thinking I've come back with my tail between my legs is still a bit of a concern :p

I wouldnt be worried about that as you will be being paid the same and so shouldnt be fussed. Which would give you the best career route though from after this? Surely there is a higher chance of further promotion within the office enviroment?

I guess it all depends on what you enjoy more. I moved home from living in London, working an office job, 37.5 hours/week @ £7/hour, so wasn't too bad.

Now I'm back in Liverpool as a bartender, pushing around 70 hours/week, on minimum wage, and I actually enjoy this job a lot more, I really don't mind the hours. I hated being stuck behind a desk 5 days a week, i much prefer standing behind a bar, pulling pints and making cocktails. I guess it's all down to what you would prefer doing, and not trying to worry about the idea of 'returning with your tail between your legs'.
