The organisation I work has lots of different service teams and the one I'm in is brilliant and once your qualified you can go anywhere with it. At the moment I'm an apprentice which ends in about 3 weeks with a permanent position and the promise of putting me through courses to get me qualified. The down side to this job is that there's a chance due to unfortunate circumstances that the service could disappear and have been told this a couple times during my apprenticeship.
Now the way I'm thinking is, I can try and push to get on this course asap and if it goes **** up I'll just be moved to a different team but I'll still be doing the course and get qualified at the same time, but with no experience.
But the service closing might not happen and it'll be fine in which case leaves me with another dilemma. I'm thinking get myself qualified and maybe do even higher up courses while getting experience. And after that jump ship. I am actually really happy in this organisation and like the benefits and perks it has. And despite me saying that theres the chance the service could go, there's no way the organisation would disappear meaning security, but then I won't be doing a role that I would be qualified for. Now the negatives to this organisation is that being vague I'm starting to see the red tape that an ex colleague was on about before he left to join another ex colleague to start their own business and are doing extremely well. Another one is the pay is very low compared to 99% of other competitors out there. Now I'm in not the sort of person who cares about money but now I'm a grown up who wants to marry his partner and have a house and kids I need to start thinking like it. My partner just wants me to be happy, to which I am. So I think I'm just venting and would like some opinions from you lot.

Have put some paragraphs in the above for reader benefit.

Firstly, there are no guarantees in business. Either as a company director or an employee. Service units and even whole business can fail or close in a rapid succession.

Unless there are very clear signs of losing your job in its entirety, try not to worry about this aspect.

Internal politics, procedures and ''red tape" are unavoidable. Even when self employed or in a small business there will be procedures to follow from health and safety through to accounting.

I know many self employed & sme owners who spend as much time wrestling with themselves in a mirror on a day to day basis as they would with a whole board of directors.

Money, quality of life and enjoyment are however hugely relevant.

I would say push for your training, get fully qualified and then you have many more opportunities.

Importantly you may perceive that you would be happier elsewhere but unless you are actually unhappy in your job, moving is unlikely to prove a self actualisation solution.

If a competitor offers more money plus the training plus a comparable working environment then you can either have an open discussion with your employer explaining your salary is below market rates and will they meet it. If they do then great. If not you can always leave although I would advise against using leaving as leverage initially.
