So I have been stuck in a job that I have hated for age now and im trying so hard to find something else I want to do but not having much luck. I have been working in IT Support for almost 8 years now in different environments (Currently for the Nhs).

The reason I stayed in the job so long was so i could spend quality time with my son who lives with me half the week, he's growing up now and because im 30 I really need to start changing things now if im to have a new career.

I dont have a degree so that is something I possibly need to look at before entering into certain careers but this would need to be part time as I have a mortgage to pay.

Can anyone recommend decent careers advisors, I went to see the local government run one a couple of years ago but they were pants and no help at all ?

Things im considering at the moment:

Counselling - It interests me, I have done a 10 week intro course but im not sure how easy it would be to get well paid employment afterwards.
Counselling Pyschology - looks interesting, would enable me to have a career that makes a difference to someone but I would need to do a Bachelors in Psychology
Police Force - great career but worried about the odd hours and the effect it could have on my family.
Armed Forces - opportunity to learn a vast amount of different trades. The negative aspect is the risk it puts on my life and the time away from family.
Teacher - Am not sure about this one, I would need a degree which I accept but I have spoken to people and they are always stressed in the job and deal with too much politics. People around me say i'd make a great teacher however.

A Career in Law ? - They do a part time LLb degree in Buckingham Uni which is feasable but I am aware that it is a long and very competitive road to working in the Legal world.

Above all I want a career that I enjoy, earn an average wage at least and be able to make my family proud by actually doing a job that is meaningful. To me a career in IT is meaningless.

Sorry for ranting, It has been quite nice jotting all this down.

:o

I know of very few people who truely enjoy their jobs. I think as well that, some of the ones you mention could be quite stressful and you need to make sure you don't jump from the frying pan and into the fire!

What aspects of your current job do you like and what do you dislike. As far as a change goes, what would your ideal job be?

Teacher - Am not sure about this one, I would need a degree which I accept but I have spoken to people and they are always stressed in the job and deal with too much politics. People around me say i'd make a great teacher however.

Trust me, the feeling when you help the children achieve something, and when they get into the college / Uni they wanted or when they fall in love with something you've introduced them to... Far outweights all the **** you have to deal with.

If you can afford to, go to decent uni and do a useful degree as a mature student. It will open up a lot more avenues for you and maybe something you havent thought of. You will also have a great time and hopefully miss the worse of the recession since now is not a good time to job hunt. Teaching becomes your life, but can be well worth it.

teaching becomes your life? what do you mean?? is that a teacher saying?

doesnt that apply to traditional subject like maths, science etc

how about if the OP studied ICT as he/she has the IT skills behind them just need the qualifications now though..
