Hi guys,

As a second year MComp Information Systems student, is there any possibility of exploring the opportunity in taking a medical career? A abit of a career change you might think. :p :o Working within a clinic at my local hospital temping had me thinking again about when I was young considering a career as a Doctor. Is there any sort of intro courses to sample a medical career? I was considering Psychology when it came to applying to University despite having an I.T. college background. I thoughts possibly volunteering to work at a hospital, however, considering I have no medical experience / qualifications, I won't be entirely suited unless they need require cleaners. :p

A mate of mine has had a similar experiance as you. He's doing a Nursing course now, hes the only bloke thats straight aswell lol.

Hes now working in a cardiac ward in Southampton, i personally think he is nuts, nut it takes all kinds.

Another mate of mine is training as a paramedic/ambulance driver, he has a History degree so i guess its possible.

Nursing and being a paramedic is obviously no where as demanding as becoming a doc. I would imagine that thats a strict science background, and at least 7 years training.

Give it a shot, i dont think its easy, infact i imagine it to be one of the most difficult career paths you can choose, and finacially crippling for a good few years.

think you need chem a level but if you are a graduate you won't have to do the full medical course as there is a fast track i believe. funding is good for it as well.

a general interest should be enough to warrant some admin/clerical work to start with and then you could try and do some medical shadowing work

Yes definately, and if you are serious now is the time. I was at Nottingham on a Comp Sci degree and looked into switching to medicine, was even offered a place in what would have been my 3rd year.

Unfortunately I bottled it and am now in IT. Still, Nottingham offer a GEM (Grad entry Medicine) course which is keeping the dream alive :)

Skidd.

I used to hang around with the medics, even had a honoury t-shirt made by one of them 'trust me, I'm almost a doctor' Ahhh the good old days.

Oi No medical threads tbh

LOL, you would still need the A-Level equivalents that you would if you did medicine along and if your academic qualifications give a shortfall then you could catch that up. Just make sure you get a good degree 2:1. I know a coupple of people who did this.
