Currently undertaking the CompTIA A+ with the intent to obtain the "trifecta". Hoping that'll be enough to get me into the interview room and all should be good from there. Anyone else in the process of, or has tried and succeeded in transitioning into an I.T career? Especially with the use CompTIA?

I was going to go down that route and decided to give web development a try after some advice here and elsewhere. I'm now two months in to learning web development and absolutely loving it. Today I deployed my first small web app.

Have a go on FreeCodeCamp and see if it's for you. I'm having way more fun doing this than I was having with my A+ studies.

Are you in a job role doing web development or is this self study?

That's awesome. I'll look into web development, but not sure if it'll be for me. So far, I'm really enjoying A+. Maybe this is coming from a place of ignorance, but I love the whole modular process of building PC's, understanding the roles of each component, how they operate as a whole and having a general sense of how and why a computer works. Similarly, low level programming is also of great interest because of the close interaction with the hardware.

How far did you get into your A+ studies?

I'd also be looking at doing some Microsoft/Linux certifications as most entry level support roles will require you to support both hardware and software.

Depends on what you want to do in IT.

If you're going down the trifecta road, then it sounds like infrastructureis what you want to do?

Stick with A+, learn Active Directory, Office 365 management, and look for work at the same time. Don't have tons of paper certs before your first job, real experience is better to begin with.

I did this.

I was foimg from crappy jo to crapy job before (im 36 now)I studied and passed my a+ a couple of years ago. It took me a few attempts to get a job from it but I did eventually get a good support job and I was able add to my exaperiance, I'm now looking to move on and progress.
I may do another cert, although I don't think I'll do net+ as I think the Cisco one's are better and have higher standing with employers.

Thanks for your reply. Are you still doing desk support? or are you looking to progress into something a little more specialised?

I am currently still in the same job, but I am looking to move on as there isn't a progression path and I've stopped learning anything new
I've been there 2 years and 1 month, think is should have moved on after 18 months but wanted the 2 years badge

I'd skip the A+ and go right into something like Cisco / Microsoft certification.

Comptia A+ will probably land you a basic job on a help desk and then it will run out after 3 years. In my opinion it's better to go for the higher level certs, someone with Cisco / MS certs are worth allot more than comptia, yes it's going to be much harder if you don't have a background in IT but you will go further quicker.

I’m currently going through my A+ As well just passed the 901 and moving on to the 902 next. Then I have network and security+ and then doing the CEH that what I’m most interested in and hoping for a career change to something along that lines, worked with computers before but no formal qualifications.

Career change! Did some work shadowing of support staff and realised that the job really isn't what I want to do. Decided software is where it's really at and have embarked on doing a MSc in Software engineering. That way, I can specialise and reach a level of proficiency that'll allow me to go entrepreneurial. Support work = salary fo lyfe. I think I rather take the risk. Thanks to all who contributed!

Sorry to hijack this thread but it seems more logical than creating a whole new one.
I've been thinking about a career change recently to IT and a friend suggested I do the "trifecta" as OP also mentioned.

Another person I know who works in IT suggested that I focus more on Automation, Cloud based stuff or Security which definitely sounds interesting to me - security especially.

I guess the question I need answering is, as someone with no previous work experience in IT, is doing certs going to help me land a job, entry-level or otherwise?

I would start with the CompTia certs A+, N+ depending on what IT general knowledge have already. Then maybe go for the Sec+ as security is becoming big now but it depends on which direction takes your most interest.
