Hey guys.

Your advice on career options please! Currently in a right pickle and would appreciate any thoughts :)

Status - unemployed for 1 month having resigned from my job on £30,000. Reasons for resigning was because the stress levels were too high and I wasn't enjoying the work / life balance. I was constantly exhausted and spending all of my money being self destructive, getting wasted (being very stupid) on the weekends - rinse repeat. I have little to no savings at the moment.

Options

1 - Go work behind a bar close to home and regularly hit the gym for much less money. Positives are that it will be a lot less stress and gives me time to get my head in a better space.

2 - I've been made offers from companies doing exactly what I was doing before in London (Marketing / PR field) - I would be starting on a clean slate and would be earning double I would compared to working behind a bar. Stress levels would no doubt go back up and I would have to commute again every day leaving little time for myself. This would however help me save up quicker at the cost of life balance (12 hours door to door 5 times a week) - my daily routing would essentially be work > gym > dinner > bed 5 days a week.

3 - Stay unemployed and be productive - go to the gym consistently and actually pursue other career opportunities and hobbies I enjoy. For example, I speak relatively good German but could take this time to really knuckle down and get much better at it. At the same time, I would be looking to find a job in Berlin, Australia or Ibiza. For me, the weather is so important, I simply can't bare the thought of working in an office in London in the winter when the central heating is making me sweat balls.

It's worth factoring in that I have a health issue which is made worse by being in intense stress, in small rooms, lots of people, fluctuating temperatures, fluorescent lights etc - essentially working in an office is not part of the plan for my endgame.

I've been to Ibiza 2013/14 and 15 and love the vibe over there along with the music. A dream job would be to work for a promotor of one of the clubs / nights out. Sunshine, music, parties, hot girls and decent money. I would just have to stay disciplined and be careful about partying too often.

Would appreciate any thoughts.

Forget the staying unemployed bit as you have no money to support yourself, option one seems like the best choice get something to tide you over and not leave a large gap in your cv while you decide where you really want to go in life.

Are you hitting the gym to try destress from the job you were doing?

Nope - has always been an important part of my life.

Moving into London is currently not an option as I'm not willing to fork £700+ a month on rent.

The world of PR is often exaggerated by most but it's usually 9:30AM - 7PM with no lunch break and a high level of intensity. (whilst playing the role of the bitch to demanding clients)

As tempting as it is to take the job offer in London, just seems the wrong move on every level. Stressful? Yes - Fulfilling? Nope. Likely to make me happy? Hell no.

Really, realistically you think that might be an option?

You should only quit a job when you have another job to goto!

Sound like a pretty standard routine, apart from you don't really say much about socialising and going out with friends

all of my money being self destructive, getting wasted (being very stupid) on the weekends - rinse repeat.

So currently you work in PR and you go out at weekends and get drunk wasted and you think a good career path would be to get a job where people are going out and getting wasted every night, well that will end well ;)

You quit a job without having another lined up and you're asking for career advice? You're past career advice. You need a psychiatrist.

lolz - get over yourself. I'm financially stable but just want more a a healthy life / work balance. I have enough funds to take a backseat for a moment and think about the bigger picture.

and yes, I believe I can work in the 'nightlife' scene and control my decisions. I'm not a crack addict.

thanks anyway :)

Yup, can't see why not. People do it and it sure beats being in England working in an office 12 hours a day looking out the window at the rain. Don't ask don't get my friend - worth a go.

.

Why not? (how much does your current commute cost you in £?)

Get paid more, more of a "career" role, less commute, more time to do own interests.

Alternatively get a good job outside london :p

Job was costing me £64 a week to commute so £256 a month and was paying £150 a month living a home so £406.

Promoter at a club? That could work until you are 35, then what?

I'd say man up and deal with it.

Set goals for yourself, i.e. by the time I'm X I'll get a nice car, by the time I'm Y I'll get a house, every year I'll take 2 holidays, etc. Reward yourself as you achieve certain milestones.

Everybody has stress issues, it's just a matter of how do you deal with them.

I like going out on a run, or game online. I also take holidays whenever I can.

Get some proper hobbies and make time for yourself.

Also, don't be anyone's bitch, prove your worth and stand your ground.

I was being pushed around when I first started working. I showed that I was willing and could get the job done. Now, I'm not afraid to say no, even to superiors; if they don't like it, they can kick me out, but 1st: they won't, I do a good job, 2nd: I can find something else pretty quickly.

You really want to be a club rep in Ibiza?? You'll never be a promoter.

16-18 hour days non stop drinking, trying to flog tickets to inbreeds who think drinking til they drop is the be all and end all of life....?

Welcome to McDonalds. Can I take your order?

and yes, I believe I can work in the 'nightlife' scene and control my decisions. I'm not a crack addict.

So you couldn't control yourself when you had a proper job, and think you will be able to control yourself when you have a 'job' getting wasted all day.

Um yea OK.

but you don't work 12 hours a day 9:30 - 7pm is 9.5 hours a day

couple of friends of mine who worked in PR didn't used to work that late - more like finishing at 6

mate of mine actually did it a few years back... was aged 29 or so - though Greek Islands rather than Ibiza

we had a strict non-compete at work and his skill set was quite specialised in that his main chance of a job was with a client or competitor... either of which he was barred from taking a job with for 6 months after leaving

so he quit his job and worked a whole season out in Greece... then came back to a nice contract role at a client

You make a comment about being stupid getting wasted at weekends and then you want to work in a pub?

It depends if you want to progress or not. Yes you may have stress now but if you move on to other positions this may get less stressful depending on what you do. You will also have money to do things you want to do rather than having no money, expensive gym costs and then not being able to go out at the weekend which may make life more stressful.

Only you can decide what you want to do and what makes you happy.
