Careers advice

Similar position to me I guess, walked into my current career as it was easy due to my interest in computers - but has also made me loathe sitting in front of a computer for any great period of time so has ruined what used to be my hobby.

What I'm trying to focus on what what I want to do day to day, rather than what job/career I want - and then try to match that up with a career.

I don't like Java or HTML, but most IT jobs don't involve that.

I work in IT, and I never have to do HTML or Java.
I spend most of my day working on servers or VMware.

Entry jobs on helpdesk and that kind of thing are easy to come by, just make sure you don't get stuck there and you learn as much as you can from everyone you can.

I'll look into it but I'm still not sure IT is for me.

Employers gonna be falling over for you :D

You're not wrong

I will find something I can do adequately, I've just never felt confident about my ability to do anything that I'd say I'm good at it.

National average should not be difficult to obtain in London.

The bit in your OP about not being great with people is what strikes me first. It's very difficult to move up the ladder or get your foot in a job if people don't take to your personality or if you can't communicate well. I'm not saying you need to change who you are but it would be the first thing I'd work on.

Yeah I think this is my biggest obstacle. I've always assumed people who are noticed and well liked get the jobs even when they seem not to be quite qualified for the role but while I doubt I'm disliked, I tend to fade into the background which is where I'm more comfortable.

Spend 2 thirds of the year travelling. - holiday rep

I think that may be the least suitable job for me, I am so not a people person.

Gonna do an online career aptitude test. I'm sure there's an unusual job out there for me that I've never considered. If I can't find it I'll pay a careers advisor to help me.

You can learn to be good with people... Or rather to convice other people you're good with them (when really you're theorising about the best way to dispose of the body)

I hope so, it's important for any career progression but as far as pretending being an important part of my job that could make miserable, I don't think I could fake being upbeat and happy all day everyday, I know that would eventually make me suicidal.

The one job I quite like the idea of doing is the self employed craftsman, if only I had the space to try it, plus it'd be a few years before I got the skills down and realistically the income stream would be unreliable but I think I might enjoy it.

I did a career test, results are what I kinda expected but the suitable job options are bit too ambitious
