carpc advice

depends what you want to use it for.
for normal use and non gaming, I'd go for the gigabyte.
if you want to consider a standalone video card, there's a lot of stuff you need to take into account, from space, temperature, budget, and heck finding a psu to power up everything.

the gigabyte mini-itx makes everything easy and convenient tho.

yep pc in the car.

and yep would need a touch screen tft

no not for gaming

im after sat nav, digital tv, digital radio and mp3.

what is the diferance between mini-itx and microATX in size then?

michael baxter that board looks good but isnt compaterbel with the ddr i have siting here as it 800mhz

The gigabyte board supports 400/533Mhz DDR2 (which is 800/1066Mhz speed bacause it is double data rate) so your memory should work fine with it.

I'm looking to do something similar and am deciding between that gigabyte board and this zotac (leaning towards the gigabyte as the zotac's socket 775 CPU will need a lot more power and no doubt will need more cooling too, however the zotac does give you support for 4GB of RAM)

oh and mini ITX is a lot smaller than micro ATX, most mini ITX boards are no larger than 20cm x 20cm whereas micro ATX boards start at around 30 x 30.

i wouldn't get the zotac simply because the gigabyte has a pci slot. I'd definately want that for a sound card. That would make the case design a lot more complicated, but I'd still want it, because that way you can throw away the HU in a car.

notebook....all self contained.
fit the screen where your radio-ashtray goes and the keyboard folds out..

i know its not very imaginative but requires less work

I modified an Asus EEE PC for mine (to make it touch screen and to fit behind the dash etc). I find that level of power plenty for car pc use.

Before that I had a Via C3 based Mini ITX system.

If you are going down the Mini ITX route, for power supplys... look at M2-ATX or similar psu's designed for in car use (remote amp turn on, ignition shut down and turn on etc)

As already mentioned, head over to digital-car.co.uk

thanks for that forum link will check it out.

as for sat nav on a pc, as said you basically have a usb receiver and the softere i have seen nav man at least do the package its designed for motor homes ect i guess were they have more space but no reason you can have it on a pc hidden away in a normal car stops you needing the silly suction units that cover half the windscreen.

as for digital car can someone that uses they tell there that when registering the word image isnt displaying on eather firefox or ie so i cant enter the generated word as i cant see the image
