We went to Carpetright to look for a new landing/stairs/hallway carpet and the wife was very keen on their Emperor range. We got mobbed by one of the sales staff who asked us where it was for to check for suitability and if we had the measurements. I gave him my sheet of paper with all my measurements on and 10 minutes later he came back and told us two prices. it was something like £316 for the carpet based on a 5m width and £340ish based on a 4m width. They also wanted £8.60m2 for a good underlay and £3.60m2 (plus a surcharge as it included stairs) for fitting. I grabbed the wife before she could dive in and commit herself and said we will have to think about it and left the store. He wouldn't give me the workings out of how much we needed though.

I read the big carpet thread on here a while ago so knew that top quality underlay was much cheaper online plus Carpetright's carpets can be bought elsewhere under different names. It turns out that their Emperor range is Stainsafe Heritage Heathers by Balta and we have now found it cheaper than Carpetright online at £11.49m2 so we will be buying it online. We have also bought two rolls of Cloud 9 Cirrus 9mm (didn't really want any thicker for the stairs) at just over £40 a roll which is massively cheaper than their stuff. We shall be getting a local indy carpetfitter to fit it all.

The question is how much do we actually need? I think it's between 25m2 and 27m2 but can't be sure as I am not certain how to work it out (I can do a room with regular sides but got confused due to the shape and stairs). I would be very grateful if someone could tell me for sure. Is it true about him saying that a 5m width works out cheaper than a 4m width? Is it better to get it in one piece or a couple of pieces? Here are my measurements, I think everything that's needed is there:-

The landing length 1 should be 3.470m. Many thanks to Bickaxe for questioning that.

I was in a similar boat to you a few months ago and got the fitter to measure up before ordering. It was quite interesting to watch him juggling the various pieces (2 landings, open tread stairs and a couple of normal stairs) to determine the most economical width of carpet.

Have you factored in the "drop" of the stairs (think its called the riser) as looking at your plan you just appear to have measured the tread.

Also, if you are getting a patterned carpet it will probably require extra m2 to ensure pattern match throughout.

Sorry, not very helpful - as I say to be sure ask the fitter.

As above I would get the fitter to measure up for you, they will know the most economical way to fit the carpet and work out what offcuts can be used where.

Get the fitter in! We had ours measured up by John Lewis and they had a piece of software that juggled around all the bits to best fit on a piece was fun to watch! With a normal room I wouldn't think twice about sorting it myself but stairs and landings are a nightmare!

Bugger, that wasn't the answer I was expecting. The wife is doing my head in about this and wants me to order the stuff. I will try to convince her.

Yes I did measure the drop on the stairs. I used this guide.

I used to be a floor planner in my last job for new build houses, wish I had the software still and I could do this more accurately.

Are those measurements correct? Landing length 1 looks wrong.
Anyway, my outstanding paint skills allowed me to do this.....

Get the fitter to measure up too but I think you only need a 4m width and 3.5m in length (which is 14m²)

Good call. The landing length is indeed wrong. It should be 3.470m. I finally figured out how to properly use text in paint and must have got the 1 from measurement '1=' somehow mixed up with the actual measurement. This could have turned into a disaster and I would have ended up in the doghouse (again) so cheers for pointing that out. :)

Finally got her to listen and we are going to try to find a carpet fitter to come around and measure things up and then fit it when it arrives. Just got to find one now.

Ignore my plan then. Have a new one.

4m width and 4.10m length will work. I doubt the Carpet notalwaysRight guy mentioned pile direction did he?

(Yes, it says 3.4m on the plan but there should be about 20cm to play with if you get 4.1m

Thank you very much for taking the time to do that. It look's like he was trying to rip me off as he definately said something around 25m2. No he didn't say anything about pile direction.

No problem, only took a few minutes.

Pile direction runs the length of the carpet. Lay a carpet from the same piece in 2 different rooms in opposite pile directions and it will look a different shade. Do it on stairs and when the light hits it makes it look terrible.

That makes a lot of sense and I see why you mentioned it now. Many thanks once again. They never said anything about that.
