What used to be a UK
and leaves two doors off their hinges saying they need shaving prior to putting back in their frames. Whose responsibility is this to put things right?

Yours I'm afraid. It's pretty normal (and extremely annoying) that carpet fitters don't generally shave the doors back down to size.

I would say it's your responsibility unless mentioned on the quote and agreed with the price.

When I helped my mate many years ago he never once planed/sanded any doors.

I would expect to do the doors myself, and in fact have had to a few times when I've had new carpet fitted over the years. They are there to fit the carpet and nothing else. I have an electric plane and table saw though which makes things a lot quicker.

I wouldn't go to KwikFit, get them to fit bigger tyres and expect them to roll the arches on my car.

I've just had a new carpet fitted in our lounge by Carpet Right and they did a good job but he told me that he'd have to take one door off as the carpet with the new underlay is a lot thicker than the old stuff.

I'm a competent DIY'er so I took the door in the garage, drew a pencil line down the edge that needed planing and took almost half and inch off the bottom of the door no trouble. Ok it was not perfectly straight but it's a job that even I can do.

On the other hand I tried tacking an electric cable underneath a radiator and put a tack straight into a heating pipe and had to get that sorted but I called out a plumber through the insurance.

Now, this sort of grinds my gears.

Home insurance is there to cover unexpected disasters, it really shouldn't be expected to cover your ****ups! Why should all the other premium payers cover the cost of your **** ups.??

Me, I would have just sucked it up. I would never contemplate making an insurance claim under these sorts of circumstance unless I really had no economic option (Like say, burning the house down)

When we had our carpets laid upstairs the carpet guy took all the doors off the hinges and moved them to another room out of the way. They mixed the doors up so when they were put back half the doors would not close correctly:(

Made me laugh who would think they are all perfect fits. :p

Should have demanded the carpet fitters shaved the carpet to make doors work without shaving them.;)

Accidental damage cover is an optional extra. At a guess, it will be the premiums of fellow accidental damage coverers who pay the premium hike for such claims.

My carpet fitters turned up and the room was spotless, door was already off and out of the room and they just fitted and went. Said thanks for making it so easy for them.

I then worked on the door to make it fit but it still needs a little more taking off it.

This is what we do, always take the doors off ourselves.

It makes there job a lot easier, and to be honest there job is to fit a carpet not faff around taking doors off because people cant be bothered to do it themselves.

Could also raise the door slightly maybe. Ive seen it where just new hinges are required and as the door opens it then raises it over the thicker carpet, works out.

Probably needs to be on the invoice if its a requirement for the job, some would do everything for you but also charge more I believe. If its just 'fit carpets' then nope, same for radiators or whatever other complications might occur somehow. I guess a plaster wont refit the wallpaper if that is somehow affected by him doing the ceiling etc
