New build property and had a guy come round to measure up and he came back with the following prices for carpet fitting and laminate installation:

Install supplied grippers trims and underlay ,Install 69m2 of carpet @ £5m2

Install customer supplied underlay laminate and accescories. 25m2 @ £18m2

£954 total including VAT.

Seems excessive to me? I thought carpet fitting would be around £3.50 max per m2 and laminate wouldn't be no where near £18.

Is this expensive or am I way off the mark with price judging?

Thanks,

Andy

After doing my own laminate a few weeks ago, I was talking to a guy at work who got theirs installed professionally and fitting was around £500 for one large room.

Although a professional would no doubt do it quicker and better than my ham-fisted efforts, it is a time consuming and physically demanding job. Took me the best part of 2 days (roughly 5 hours per day) to lay out and tidy up laminate in a 10' x 8' bedroom. And I ached for days afterwards...

Carpet fitting ought to be a bit quicker and cheaper, depending on whether the company expects you to shift all the furniture around or if they are one of the outfits prepared to do that as well.

Laminate isn't cheap as it can be quite time consuming as per the above.

Don't forget your carpet laying also includes laying grippers and underlay so while it maybe a bit steep for carpet fitting you are getting more than just carpet fitting!

Do it yourself, carpet is easy. Just take your time and always undercut when trimming!

Wood/laminate bit harder but again no reason not to do it yourself.

My local carpet fitters charge £50 to do a room. For the hassle, time and possible expense of doing it myself (and making a mistake) I would rather pay someone who can do it 10x better than me in a fraction of the time.

Laminate is a bit easier (IMO), be sure to use knee pads to reduce the aches and pains on yourself the following day.

Each region has different costs.
In South Wales we paid £3.50 psm carpet & £10 psm laminate. That included underlay and gripper.

Laminate is much easier than carpet for the simple reason that if you get it wrong you can simple get a new piece out of the box and have another go mess up a carpet and you need a new one!

I'd never touch carpet fitting but have no problems doing laminate!

£3/4 per sq m is the going rate here.

I like to try doing things but I don't think I'd give carpet fitting a go.

A good carpet fitter will do a good job in a quarter of the time it would take me.

70m2 of carpet is a fairly large on, guess it depends on how many cuts/rooms etc.

Overall it's not bad price but I would try and get it down a bit.

Still having a nightmare, but hoping the carpet fitter I have coming on Saturday to measure up will be good. He's happy for me to supply the carpet as so many places keep telling me "if there's a problem then you have no comeback etc..." but are literally pricing the carpet we want as double the price.

Never knew it would be this stressful.
