We're re-decorating our home office and want to lay some new carpet (I don't like wood flooring, or chair mats/rugs). What type and method of carpeting will be most suitable? Wheeling an office chair back and forth over normal pile carpeting is hard work, and over time ruins the carpet.

We visited a carpet showroom and they advised I screw 3mm hardboard down on top of the floorboards and lay an 'office type' carpet on top of that. I am thinking a really short pile, almost carpet tile but would like something good quality which doesn't ruck up after a few months of the chairs going back and forth. I haven't done that before so I don't know whether it's a good suggestion, whether I would need to take the gripper rods up, whether to avoid underlay and go for a felt backed carpet, whether carpet adhesive is needed, etc.

Has anybody done this before and achieved something similar still with good results down the line?

Had my office chair with 5 casters on a normal lounge carpet and standard underlay for over 2 years. Hasn't made any difference to the carpet and use the chair daily for a few hours.

How much wheeling about are you likely to be doing? If it's not much then can you get away with a big mat made from the offcuts of the carpet (assuming there's enough)?

Rugs are a pain, they ruck up when you move about. Get a decent quality clear plastic mat to protect the carpet. Places like Staples sell them - although mine was from Costco.

The more casters the better, for spreading the load out.

A chair with a base ring of ball bearings would be the best!
