HI,

In the process of redecorating pretty much our entire house. Nothing too major just painting / change windows / sockets etc.

Eventually we would want to change all the carpet. Now reading around people seem to recommend to get the underlay and grippers online as it is much cheaper.

Found this place:

http://www.tradepriced.co.uk/tredaire_dreamwalk_11mm_carpet_underlay.html

Looks like one of the best ones, anyone know much about it ?

Randomly went to one carpet place and he said he can beat / pricematch any online store and to get it from them instead.

The plan was then to buy a load of underlay now and store it in my garage / room. And then get the carpet and do a room at a time. Either myself ( everyone says it is VERY difficult to do properly though ) or get someone to fit it gradually overtime.

Suggestions ?

Just had 20m2 of carpet fitted in a hall and stairs for £51, it's not worth making a hash of the job yourself to save such a small amount of money.

Underlay wise, i managed to get carpetright to discount the best underlay they sell, think it was £8.99 m2 to almost match the online prices, so rather than messing around just got everything from one place.

We went for Tredaire dreamwalk in my old house and it had a very nice bounce to it when you walked on the carpet. The underlay isn't difficult to lay as it will be hidden by the carpet, it just needs to be joined correctly. The grippers are just hammered down a set distance from the skirting board, again not hard.

If you find an independent carpet fitter (not supplier) then I'm sure they would be happy to fit the underlay, grippers and carpet for you. You'll struggle with a carpet shop though as they make a margin through the extras like the underlay and grippers. Just make sure you measure correctly if you do buy it all yourself.

We've got 70m2 of carpet, and underlay (Wilson 42oz), fitted for £1300 all in by sourcing ourselves (carpet and fitter). We were looking at the 56oz underlay but that was too thick for the type of carpet we were after, at 15mm. The 42oz is 11mm

I've fit my own carpet before and I wouldn't say it's difficult, it does however require patience and care but you can buy the tools you need to do it for about £25.

You'll need a carpet tucker tool, used for pushing the carpet into the edge of the skirting board and between the gripper and a carpet knee kicker for moving the carpet into position. You can get these in any DIY (B&Q or smaller) store. Apart from that all you need is a stanley knife, carpet, underlay and the gripper boards.

In terms of doing it, take it slowly and start in a sensible place. Always undercut rather than overcut as you can always trim down if needed. If you muck up and slice too much off you're screwed!

Cloud 9 Cumulus 11mm Carpet Underlay £44 a roll inc delivery on on amazon, best price by far and top undelay, not a ripoff like the stuff from carpet right etc
