carrier unlock service any good?

got an iphone off ebay but found its locked to 3 , the previos person is willing to pay for the unlock but how does it work , can i just keep the iphone here without a sim card in it and after a few days it will be unlocked ? or does the original owner 3 sim need to be in it ? or my tmobile one?

The previous owner needs to action the request via "3" then thje network operator will pass this info onto apple who then realease the unlock via itunes.

No sims need to be in it, only the phone and itunes.

I had both my 3GS and 4 unlocked by O2 without Apple or iTunes involved!

That's strange as my 3G / 3GS / 4 have all been unlocked by O2 through iTunes

I recently got my iPhone 4 unlocked from Orange and took about 10 days but they also mentioned Apple somehow authorise the unlock, not sure if true. I recieved an email from Orange which gave instructions to link phone with iTunes using different sim to Orange, next it was Bob's your uncle and Fanny's your aunt
