Carry on luggage weight

Sometimes…

Depend on a lot of things, depends on the airport, the airline, or the person at check in.

To have the most chance, check in online before you get there and don’t have check in luggage so you never see a human until the gate.

I found Heathrow airport don’t weigh your bags at the gate…however, I’ve seen airlines weigh the carry on bag at the gate in Limerick and also in Tokyo. In Morocco too they weigh my carryon at check in luggage. But I had to do that not to check in my luggage but Rabat Airport don’t do online check in, they insist on check-in in person so every time they weigh my bags.

Typically…..if it’s a little over, doesn’t matter, just shove a couple of things in your pocket, things like battery is easy to shove 500g into a pocket.

Who are you flying with?

As per above, all depends. I've been over size and weight and never been checked - I do find if it's a backpack then theres less chance too.

Thanks! I'll leave it at home. Was only really taking it to amuse myself on the 4.5hr connection. The phone / tablet will have to do

Yeah, if it’s just for amusement at connection then just browse on the tablet. 4hrs will go by quick, get a coffee, a snack, to the loo, before you know it. Boarding call.

In my experience the bigger airlines don't seem fussed. The smaller or budget ones can be very strict. Jetstar (Australias Easyjet) encourage you to weigh it at check in if they see it and put a tag on it, in the boarding queue they come with a scale on wheels checking those without a tag and forcing those with overweight ones to go back to the counter to check them in (and pay). I avoid this by wearing my jumper or jacket, headphones around the neck and holding my ipad in my hand which saves at least a KG. If you fly KLM you can purposely go over as they let you check them into the hold for free at the desk.

Laptops in their own bag are, or at least used to be, seperate to carry on luggage. I was always allowed a laptop + a bag. But, if it's only for entertainment for a couple of hours, leave it behind, less effort, less risk of it breaking/being stolen or lost etc.

I’ve been on Jetstar….saw the scales at the gate and then I moved away from the gate and proceeded to empty my bag as much as possible. Good thing I weighted my bag before I left home and I knew the rough weight of all my gear like each lens, battery. Stuffed as many into my pockets as possible.

It can vary indeed, Air Baltic who we fly with occasionally to Riga sometimes check and other times don't care so it all comes down to the day and the person at the gate!

We have stuffed items into jacket pockets / arms even just to take weight / size away from the carry on as AB only allow 8kg between the luggage and your rucksack so takes some playing of the game to make it work!

Just flew TAP to the Azores via Lisbon recently and had no issues with anything being checked but then their luggage + rucksack allowance is slightly higher if I recall.
