I'm looking at moving away from OSCommerce for a major site i run....i'm considering either cube cart or zen cart at the moment and was wondering if anyone had any experience with using them and wished to comment on their stability, ease of setup/use etc.

Particually important is the ability to add attributes to products, this could be radio, drop down type options or multiple text fields for things that are personalised.

I've used CubeCart extensively recently. Refering to your point about attributes attached to products - the default way of handling this is poor. I believe there are mods that make this simpler however. Check out the forums.

CubeCart smokes OSCommerce i reckon. Its still not the best product in the world, but its far better than OSCommerce/Zen Cart (which is OS C, rehashed).

Matt

Thanks for the info :)

Product attributes to the level i need is always a pig to implement, the OSC way is really messy. I have found a modification that handles the text bit so it cant be any worse than osc and once its setup i dont care as long as it works!!

Cubecart seems to be neater, tidier and a lot more compact than OSC, do you find it stable and reliable when in use?

Slime,
Yeah, its not too bad. I have had to hack mine to pieces for various reasons, but if you can use the pre-built gateways and mod's then you shouldn't have any trouble. The admin panel is much nicer to use than OSC, and again, can be modded fairly easily.

Its certianly the best out of the carts I looked at (OSC, CubeCart, Zen).

Matt

cheers Matt - itll be fairly well bodged together and hacked about when i implement all the changes needed for the new store but should pull together nicely.

Yep, if you need any help, post back or drop me an email. I know where most stuff resides now having hacked it to pieces, so should be able to help out. :)

PS: Just out of interest, is this for selling Photos?

Matt

Nope - not for selling photos, or at least not this particular shop. Its a rebuild of a larger and successful site i run for a company i work with, seeing as i am doign a complete product overhaul to bring it inline with their 2006 product range i thought i'd look into redisign adn that got me onto a complete rebuild!! :p

Thanks for the offer of help though - i'll shout if i get stuck.

P.S - do you reccomend any "essential" modifications?

Ah gotcha. Erm, in terms of mod's, its basically pick and choose what you need. I wanted to have a "Latest news" facility on the homepage, so stuck my own in. Same with having "Accessories for these products" - I wrote one from scratch. Both of these are available as paid for, plugin mods though. The only other main one I used was called "Delivery by value" (i think!). With this, you set different delivery levels. Eg.
- Orders up to £15 = delivery free
- Orders from £15 - £99 = £2.95

etc. etc.

Another one I wrote from scratch was an order analysis page for the admin screens. This will show you all the months since orders started coming in including total order value, no. of orders etc, and uses a bit of Javascript to show/hide orders for that month. It also then shows you total amount of money taken since the store opened, and the top 10 customers. If this sounds of interest, I could chuck it your way. You'd have to tweak it a bit, as it was designed specifically for our needs.

As I say, give me a shout if you need anything.

Matt

Matt - i dont spose you have any experience with the SEO mod, i installed it and now nothing works, i just get internal server errors which is odd and i dont know why!

Very complicated and thus can be messy - loads of modules and add ins tho if you cna do a bit of coding its great but its a bit bloated and messy for my needs (after 2 years of use!)
