Case fan query

Hi there,

I have 5 case fans in my system, can someone answer the following:

1. One of my fans at the front of my system (Yate Loon LED), is dimmer than the other fan I have. The brighter one has its own independant power from the PSU whilst the dimmer one is shared to another fan. Is this what is causing the brightness issue?

2. I had trouble trying to get all the fans to reach the PSU so I used the AUX fan slots on the motherboard. One of my fans wouldn't reach the PSU or an AUX so the only option was the Northbridge fan slot which wasn't occupied as I have an Abit AB9 Pro which uses a heatpipe cooling system. Is this safe to carry on using?

Many thanks for any help with these questions :)

1. I don't think splitting the power conenctor would limit the power received by the fan as you often find splitters to connect two hard drives together etc which simply wouldn't work if they weren't receiving the correct power. I think it has more to do with the fans themselves and the brightness of the LED's used.

2. Well nothing's blown up yet has it! :p Seriously though, if the motherboard uses a heatpipe system for the northbridge then the fan header next to it would have been intended to be used by a normal fan. It should be fine.

Have you tried swapping the two arround? If the same one stays dim then you'll know its the LED's and not where its getting its power from.

And now for my trademark stupid question, are they both Yate Loons?

Looks great by the way, too lazy to post again in your build thread! :D

PK!

In answer to q2, I simply wouldn't worry about it. I've had extra case fans run off the NB Fan header before with no issues.

If the 2nd fan is dimmer its also a good indication that it is running slower aswell. This points to not recieving enough power/having too many things on one rail. This sometimes happens to me if I put too many cathodes on the same rail - one set will only be half lit! Try it on a different molex if possible or check out how much load you are putting on each rail.

As for the NB header - I really wouldn't worry about that at all. I have a fan powered of my nb header and it has been fine (it is afterall what its there for).

w3bbo, I have been using the molex connectors that indicate "Fan only". I haven't got anymore of these, thats why I have paired up fans to go on one connector. Can I use my fans on standard molex connectors or is this not suitable?

Yeah any molex connectors will be fan 'compatible' - the fan only ones will most likely be run of a weak rail hence the low power output and your dim fan.
