Would it be possible to fit a speaker to the side of a case in the same way as side case fan? Would it cause too much vibration?

Just an idea. Probably not a very good one.

In theory, i guess that it should be possible with some kind of mounting mechanism.

Vibration, as you say, could be a problem, and you'd also have to check that the speaker is fully shielded, don't want any of you PC internals going wrong...

Yes, its possible. Just mount it with a thin rubber strip between the speaker and the case, and like v|iper says, make sure they are shielded.
