hiho

please spec me up some tool goodness for some modding.
anything better than a Demel for cutting? price / performance.

if so which model? 300/400?

don't really want to spend a fortune, so if a lower model can do the job then that's good. experiences welcome :) would be cutting aluminium / perspex / plastic btw.

i was looking at this page: http://www.tooled-up.com/ManChannel.asp?MAN=Dremel&MID=RBAD&TYPE=1&Page=1&Sort=3

those prices any good?
reccomend flexishaft?

any other things useful?

thanks in advance :)

i find my dremel rubbish for cutting big holes, its just to small to get a good straight line, i would recommend a good jigsaw more as it is easier to use for straight or curved cuts. get a cheap dremel replica for other stuff save u loads of money

I don't really use the Dremel for much other then the grinding wheel tbh. For cutting I mainly use a jisaw (Get two blades, 1 for long straight cuts and 1 narrower blade for corners) and a hacksaw. A good drill is also essential with a range of drill sizes(Get a few 1-1.5mm ones as they snap easy). A set of needle files are very usefull(I got a set of 6 for £2.80 from B&Q). A range of sandpaper and wet and dry. And finally my favourite tool... a riveter.

a coping saw is also handy for when a jigsaw is too aggressive.

you will need some files. One large flat/founded and a set of needle files.

ooo thanks for the info

yeah i was wondering about the dremel for cutting big shapes, so looks like a bad idea.

any more tips welcome :)

Use Jigsaw for cutting large shapes and thick aluminium. Dremel and clones are good for finishing or cutting in areas where jigsaw cannot. Jigsaw will also give you perfectly straight edges which need very little finishing. Hand files are also very handy good control over finishing.
Also a drill with selection of all size bits.
I find a riveting machine very useful for joining case parts together.

Can anyone recommend anywhere to buy small quantities of aluminium and perspex for case modding and building?

Also, what's the best way of bending sheet metal?

best way would be with an brake press
otherwise try this link

I also recently bent a box by using a vice and two pieces on angle iron for the bending.

tbh though, it's always going to look a bit ghetto if you bend anything complicated without a brake press.
