I need a case to send off for server colocation. I needs to be as small as possible but with a solid build. I may be asking for a bit too much but I'm obviously trying to keep my costs down, so no silly money that I know they can cost.

I would go for a shuttle but they have their own motherboards etc. Unless I'm mistaken?

It basically needs to fit a power supply (normal sized unless someone can direct me elsewhere), motherboard, DVD drive and one hard drive. Nothing like a ridiculous 8800GTX etc.

£100 max really, preferrably cheaper, but I'd rather fork out the extra dosh for a good build quality.

Simple solution is a sugo sg01, sg03 or temjin 08 if you can live with matx (does have in built graphics usually)

Alternatives are the lian li a05, g50, v600 all relatively compact, take atx, and a05 allows for a full size cpu cooler etc where as the g50 and v600 have the psu above the cpu.

You though about a 1u server case, probably the easiest option as it would fit in one of the hosts racks.

I have yes, although they're very hard to find case only, they all seem to be very expensive, and come with everything bar RAM and motherboard.

a 1u unit wouldn't fit an atx supply unit in anyways :)

EDIT: just had a thought some of the larger lascala (link to lc17) fit in a rack (obviously not 1u and may cost more due to size) when used with the ra01 handles. The cases should take full atx equipment and comes in under £100 for most of them

Antec and Chenbro both do 2U rackmount cases that should fit standard atx hardware / PSUs as far as i know..

last time i looked for work i could find the antec case for about £150 and the Chenbro one was around the £90 mark without a psu.. pretty sure that anywhere i could link on to would be classed as a competitor though?

You don't give a lot of info. Generally colo's make you pay for the amount of rack space you use and what your bandwidth limit is. As such a 1U system would be my recommendation as it would minimise cost - and remember any minimal extra outlay will be compensated by a lower monthly rental cost. You can get 1U rack cases for well under £100, or a bit over £100 including a PSU. That's where i'd go unless they don't care how much space you use - in which case a 4U rack case or standard desktop tower would do fine.

You could also consider 2nd hand - eBay.
