Hello,

I am hoping to build a an Ivy Bridge rig (when it is out next year).

I am going to be putting a mini-itx sandbridge motherboard and chip in it for the time being (possibly I3-2100T and either GA-H67N-USB3-B3 vs P8H67-I)

Very strange move you'll say but I shall need a new HTPC in the future and need a new desktop now.

I am planning to swap out the mini-itx board and replace with a full-size Ivy Bridge board when they come out and then put the mini-itx in a new mini-itx case then.

Anyway, it means looking for the case, PSU and GPU for the eventual Ivy Bridge build now.

I would be really grateful for advice as to what to look for - I like the look of perhaps the Coolermaster HAF but am open to all suggestions.

You advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

So you want a case that can take a current mini-ITX and then a full size ATX board? do you mean a mini ATX?

In general it's best to buy when you need to. Better price, better choice.

The HAFs are good cases, then after it's really up to you. I like the Raven RV02W-EW (not in stock), the Silverstones in general, and the Fractal Design Define R3.

think he wants a full case, and a mini ITX board in it. Depends what cases take mini ITX, my guess no many towers.

If he is gonna go mini-itx now, might as well take the mini-itx case as well. And get the full desktop rig later.

Thanks for your replies.

Yep that is right - mini-itx in a full tower. I see what you mean, it never occurred to me that a mini-itx would not automatically fit a full tower like a micro-atx board would.

My problem is that I currently have three hard drives in an old AMD 2500XP PC, which is becoming unsuable, due to the specs - 1 GB RAM and some shockingly bad integrated graphics (I bought the board in 2004 and it was not even top of the range then).

I was hoping to put the hard drives in the new tower with the mini-itx to keep my going until Ivy Bridge. I was hoping to eventually build a really small HTPC for my living room eventually, which would mean buying a mini-itx case that will not take three hard drives.

Hmm - bit of a brick wall.

Well spotted, specifically says on the website that it specifically supports it - is that a generally well regarded case? I was after something that was quiet as I am hoping to do some music recording.

In terms of the PSU and GPU what sort of things would I be looking at? I am not massively into gaming (though would perhaps do some light stuff) but would like to do some video editing.

Thanks

Its a very good case, either of them (Lite/Advanced)

Infact you only have to search the case section to see how many times it gets recommended.

As for PSU, this Antec is a great price and high quality - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=ca-148-an

gpu choice would be a nvidia card for cuda support if any programs you use can make good use of the massive gpu raw processing power,

http://www.nvidia.com/object/what_is_cuda_new.html

So depending on Budget something like a GTX460 1GB or upto GTX560 and the ti variant will be good.

Thanks mate.

Think i'll go with the case - exactly what I am looking for.

That PSU has got some great reviews and also appears to be ideal - have noted that OCUK are giving a significantly better price on this than other sellers. There isn't like a small difference is there or is this just a really fanastic deal?
