Hi, im looking for a quiet case to house my file server in, and have some pre requisites to meet... closest so far is a Silverstone TJ08

Quiet - I will be using volt modded (5v probs) Yate Loon fans, have plenty of the 80mm and 120mm DS12 fans ;)

Smart Looking - By this, i mean CM ATCS, Lian-Li, Silverstone style, brushed alu look cases, not Thermaltake etc...

HDDs - must hold at least 6 HDDs (no optical, so can go in the 5.25s (i've got grommit mounts)

Mobo - This is where i come unstuck, must hold a Flex ATX board (so im looking for a MATX case) and be as small as possible (not SFF, but something like a V600 ideally)

Correct me if im wrong but does a Flex ATX not fit in a ATX case aswell?

TJ08 will be crampt, so basically you want a high volume of hard drives in as small a case as possible?

You won't get 6 hard drives in a TJ08. Hell, I don't want to put more than one in mine, but that's not using the optical bays.

would do, but ATX cases are getting large... even the smaller ones...

FLEX ATX would fit on an ATX mobo tray same as MATX, but it just means a bigger case... cramped dont bother me.. so long as the HDDs wont melt and the case looks nice...

spec is going to be :

1.2ghz Celery
256mb SDRAM
90w Seasonic :p

got it given, so im going to put it to use in a plan i had for a while ...

so only the HDDs making any real heat

if it was a nice case... id be VERY tempted to ATX it up... ie CM201 or 110

EDIT...

Seems Antec have a few nice ones :)

SLK3000B
SLK2650BQE
P150

What do you reckon to these ?

Thx

Bit big!

ATX cases!

P150 could be good, but your looking at a lot of money, and is the 90w PSU pushing it a bit for that number of hard drives? Does the motherboard even support that many?

Get the Antec NSK4400 or whatever it's called. Plenty of hard drive space in there, and it's literally about 2 inches taller than the TJ08.

Edit: Also dirt cheap. And comes with a decent PSU.

You may be right :o

Just it came in the case lol

Ive got a 400w good PSU spare tho, so will use that :)

SATA cards for the mobo

You need an Akasa mATX Acrylic case - excellent ventilation, 4 x 3.5" bays and 2 x 5.25" bays so you could have 6 HDD in there. It has the same external dimensions as the Silverstone and the one I have has 1 x 120mm Akasa Amber inlet fan and 2 x 80mm Akasa Amber exhaust fans.

Perfect for your requirements!

im looking at that one, found it for under £30... BUT... it says it has 80mm and a 50mm fan... did you mod yours ? or is it different ?

No, it's silent. The acrylic is about 10mm thick, of very high optical clarity and someone I know who used to work with methacrylates has definitely advised me against cutting it with anything other than a diamond cutter. But, as you correctly point out, they are cheap as chips and if you blow a panel, you could buy another one quite cheaply.

I have to be honest though, you'll never sell it on!

Just a word of warning with your file server regarding the PSU. Make sure it can handle all the HDDs. I was using a 430W cheapo unit and it couldn't take 4 HDDs and an Athlon XP. 6 HDDs are going to take a lot of juice, and I ended up frying my mobo with just 4 when the PSU gave out.

Good luck with it! If you can, look at a CM500. I'm using one for my server and it's great. I've got 4 HDDs in the 3.5" bays, and there's space for more in the 5.25" bays. Not sure how much these cases are nowadays, but you might be able to pick one up for a reasonalbe price second hand.

Got the Antec SLK3000B from a competitor, for £26 with free delivery, and im very impressed for the price...

door a little flimsy, but meh... no warez talk please!... and it stays on all the time... plus, what can you expect for £26 :p
