Case that fits inside a rack

Hi folks.

I have an el cheapo case at the moment which is actually great as it slides into a rack without problems.

I intend to upgrade the CPU to a 5900x and wish to go to an aio so I need more depth.

Wondering what folk thought might work well...the bespoke rack cases are useless as very little airflow with 80mm fans on the back usually.

I was thinking of a 4000d but I'm not sure the front will fit

I would strongly disagree about the rack cases being ‘useless’ given the sort of systems that are racked up. My current server has 8 CPUs in a 1U chassis and it runs just fine. It’s even tolerably quiet.

Ewww 1U servers. Is that some sort of custom build? I think all the 1U servers we build are all single socket.

@OP if you want a rack mountable case then I'd hit up eBay for very old servers where you can just strip the guts to use the case.

Nope, it’s a Dell blade of some description. And it has to be some sort of masterpiece of cooling because it doesn’t run especially hot or loud. It’s good. I’m extremely happy with it.

And I’d be REALLY careful about buying an old server in a case from the ‘bay because most of these things are not standard inside. Think building inside an old Mac case. Whereas a SuperMicro or Silverstone type case will take iTX, mATX, ATX, E-ATX and a semi-standard PSU.

Nothing against 1u systems but it's useless to me as I don't want to get a new system.

I have a 4650g, 32gb ram, lots of disk space at present.

I want to get a 5900x + GPU.

I can't fit these in a 1u case.

The commercial 4u cases for atx are all poor in terms of air flow.

This is why I want to use a regular case that can fit into the slot, and sit on a rack shelf.

That's the question I'm asking...

Maybe the o11 air?

I didn’t say it had to be 1U, simply that rack cases were not useless, quite the opposite.

Putting an O11 on its side in a restricted environment on the other hand doesn’t sound that good an idea.

Clearly though you’ve decided this is what you’re going to do so knock yourself out.

I have a small system that runs my home media and home assistant.
I keep it in a rack..I use laptops and ps5 for gaming.

No need to be nasty about it.

I'm just asking for if anyone knew of cases that are deep and not that tall.

Thank you for your input anyway.

Disagree, but maybe you're just choosing to phrase "I haven't found a good one" as "they're all crap".

I bought a 4U case to build a PC for the rack at work, it's got 2x120mm and 1x80mm fans in the front and 2x80mm fans at rear, nice linear through airflow. Past all the cards. Searching online there are plenty so I won't bother linking to model names.

Assuming you're not transcoding at source, and HA doesn't require a lot of grunt anyway, so airflow on a 4U case shouldn't be too concerning.

I'm also assuming your rack is getting sufficient airflow and isn't hidden away at the back of a cupboard.

OEM servers also use fan baffles to direct the airflow over things like the CPU and memory rather than just blast it through the entire enclosure.
