Cases with front doors

Just pondering this earlier tonight, im thinking of changing my case, would love something ATX sized with cable management and plenty of room for drives etc..
Something along the lines of the Corsair Obsidian550D or Fractal designs R4..

I like the idea of the front door on these cases but are the doors left open when the computer is on or is it safe to operate them with the door closed?
I'd have thought that air flow would be compromised?
 
Having a door also really helps with optical drive noise, I had a NZXT Lexa and I could barely hear my optical drive, I miss it :(
 
Yeah I have a P180 and there's vents down the side of the door, works a treat. As mentioned above, really helps cut down system noise.
