How common is this? I reported it to the bank but they are also unsure as to why it asked twice.

No I didn't get it wrong. I ought to have been more precise with my query. The machine asked for it again as a security measure just after pressing the button for the amount I had selected?

Enter pin incorrectly by accident, goes through to withdrawal screen anyway, you want to draw out yer fiddies, it asks you again as you got it wrong first time. Only time I've ever had one ask twice.

thats when it asks you when you have it wrong the first time.

Op got PIN wrong. Ashamed to admit it. What he's described is text book ATM behaviour especially for a non bank affiliated cash machine.

possible tampered with cash machine ?
I don't know? The machine is in the bank and they had the engineer in this afternoon prior to me using it. The message was something to the effect "please re-enter your pin as an extra security measure placing your hand above the keypad to shield it from other users".

that makes no sense, they don't have access to the software, they usually just a camera pointing down and a reader in the slot.

99.999% he simply miss typed the pin. Especially as that's exactly when it asks for pin confirmation when you get it wrong the first time.
