Cash machine problem. What happens now?

I went to withdraw £250 from a petrol station cash machine today and stupidly left without taking the cash. The forecourt was empty, and by the time I realised I hadn't taken the cash, the machine must have taken the money back.

I tried to withdraw the money again but was informed I'd reached the maximum daily amount I could withdraw.

Now my question is; will this money be automatically returned to my account? Or will I need to pursue it? Also, should I be pursuing it with my bank (RBS) or the ATM owner (Nationwide)?

phone your bank i'd imagine would be the first port of call

are you sure the machine took the money back though? no dodgy characters about?

ps where abouts in the kingdom did this happen?

Pretty sure no-one took it. Was at a petrol station near the Odeon in Dunfermline. There was one other person on a bike filling up, but I'm almost certain he couldn't have gone to the machine and returned to filling up his bike by the time I turned around. Serves me right for having 4 hours sleep last night.

You will need to go into your bank and complete an ATM dispute form. If it has been sucked back into the machine you should get the funds back into your account within 5-6 weeks. If someone was behind you at the atm they may have taken the money which means you are out of pocket.

would it be worth asking the garage to put aside tonights cctv in case the money wasy lifted? theft by finding and all?

might take a bit longer but at least the op would have a chance of getting his money back if it has been taken

Lol I have no idea how anyone could do this. If I was withdrawing 250 quid Id be watching that cash like a hawk then looking over my shoulder for hoodlums! hahaha

If I checked my balance and it said "Do you want any other services?" and I thought *Yeah ill grab a tenner while im here* then got distracted I may walk off..

but If I approached a machine thinking "Im taking 250 quid out", Id be holding my wallet right infront of me and watching it spit the cash out into my hand.

Must have more money than sense lol

i wonder how long we'll have to wait for the hilarious "i found 250 quid in a cash machine slot" thread later on?

i'm simply too poor for this to ever happen to me. having said that, i did manage to leave around 3 odd quid change in a self service machine in sainsburys the other day. :o

Aside for the daftness of the scenario if the money wasnt snatched then you will get it back if the machine took it back but id be reporting it, asking for the cctv and doing anything else possible to back up the case just in case.

TBH ive done similar when my phone has gone off at the same time as the card has come back and the cash comes out! something had to give! Fortunately it was only £50 and i realised before i actually walked away! Multi-tasking is a killer!!!

Important question, what is the timeout on a cash machine that detects the cash has not been removed?????

lol someone probably knows this why I dont know, google?

Go and experiment?

But make sure there's no queue behind you or you'll have them wishing death lol.

Did the same thing 9 years ago.

The machine takes it back after a while. Bank said they'd put it back into my account if they could track it back.

Not a word from them, 200 quid light + 200 more to pay for the tires and exhaust/

Totally this.

how can you go to a cash point with the prime intention of getting money and then forget to....get money?

Leaving your card i can just about understand, but the money!?

tbh I rarely actually draw out any cash nowadays most of my spending is with plastic or online banking, no joke! I'm sure I am not alone...... (even pubs take plastic now)
