This christmas I am a bit skint so instead of spending lots of money on presents I've come up with making people something and settled on a cast of my hand. I found out the dermagel mix for the mould but I'm stuck on what to use for the actual cast. I really want to use something transparent so that I could maybe put in little things they could see like kinder egg toys. Does anyone know of such a material? It just needs to pourable to then set solid and something you can get from an arts and craft shop or something. Any help would be very much appreciated.

"Here you go Grandma.

I hope you get as much pleasure from it as I do..."

:o

Why not just cast your face?

I'd cast my face but I hear a lack of air to the lungs brings medical problems and unfortunately I cannot give my Grandma one as I can't be bothered digging right down to the pits of hell and even if I did, does the devil allow personal keep sakes while burning in the fiery blaze?

you can buy casting resin that's almost totally clear, and can be coloured with a selection of dyes designed for the process.

i'm not sure where i got my last batch from, but this site looks like a good bet :)

Thanks for the link, it looks quite good. And if I get flexible stuff I'll be able to say that it's a remote or DVD holder. That would rock.

Lmao :D

Excellent thread, I'm not skint but I may get friends and relatives a cast of my hand !!

LoL :D

I'm glad someone thinks it's a good idea! I don't see how people don't think it is, it's so random it's awesome. Just imagine them opening it up on Christmas day, "Oh look I got a calender, that'll be useful. A diary, some socks and sweet! I wanted this DVD! WTF? Why did he send me a cast of his hand, ******* oddball". They won't forget what you got them when you ring up to ask them about their day.

Plaster or jesmonite is probably the cheapest, then there's a load of casting resins like fastcast that comes in clear or white and you add dye. You might also want to use clear two-part silicone, but it takes a bit longer to cure and the inside of the mould will need to be immaculate. Then you could have a squidgy clear hand. Or put some dye in it and reinforce the fingers with wire so it's modellable. Two-part expanding foam might give good results for a lot less moolah, since you want to be el-cheapo ;)

Just because people don't forget what you did, doesn't mean it's a good thing - think about it ;)

Good thinking. I have the kits for moulding the hand now I'm just finding the best material to do it with within a £20 budget. The fast cast stuff sounds good, I shall have a look for it.

I know it's odd nut every Christmas I seem to go through the same routine giving and getting the same stuff and it's got boring. Even if it gives them a chuckle and then they bin it at least it was different, how much stuff do you get at Christmas that just ends up at the back at the draw? I'd rather interesting **** over store bought generic **** any day.
