I just moved in to my new house, in which i've got network ports in two rooms.

My room will have the router in it and I was wondering do I need regular patch cables or crossover cables to connect the router to the network port and the network ports to the computers? I tried using the cables supplied with the router and when plugging a pc in to the network port it just says the cable is unplugged.

Its possible (tho unlikely) that the network ports in your house are wired up as a crossover for the previous owner using a computer to computer connection. Have you actually looked in behind the wall? they may even not be wired up at all.

For computer > router networking you should be using straight-through patch cables all round.

Most decent routers and switches these days are auto sensing so it might not even matter whether you go straight through or crossover.

You should be going with straight through cables though, but as I mentioned, any decent piece of networking kit these days will automatically sense what type of cable is being used and will switch accordingly.
