Quick question. The company I work for are moving premises and we're going to be installing all our own cabling in the new joint. We've ordered 305m of CAT 6 cable and it's turned up unshielded.

Should i send this back and get some shielded cable for the patchbays, behind walls and conduit around the offices?

Would unshielded cause us problems?

If I was putting cabling in walls I'd definitely go for shielded. From a patch panel to a switch, it shouldn't matter - CAT 6 is meant to support 10 Gb/s over "up to 55 m" without shielding.

If you're going to the trouble of installing shielded cable you may as well use Cat6a.

Is there anything unusual about the location that would justify shielded cable? If it's just a standard office install I can't see why it'd be necessary.

I was just contemplating whether shielded would be a better idea.

It's going to be in a warehouse and channelled into conduit in the offices.
