Sometimes when I stroke my cat, after a short while it'll suddenly try to bite me, and also whenever it lays its paws on me he'll bring his claws out slightly (enough to hurt me a bit). It's 4 human years old now. are these signs of affection or aggression?

There are no signs (hissing, hair standing up on back, tail waggling, etc).

You are right, cats are awkward creature.
And my cat endorses the saying "As every cat owner knows, nobody owns a cat."
