Cat cable tester

I purchased a cheap tester that comes in two parts online and upon testing a a couple of patch cables, the main tester's l.e.d.s count down in sequence from 1 - 8 but G doesn't light up. The small receiver however skips 8 but this time G lights up

Does this indicate the tester is faulty or is it working fine ? The instructions just say that both parts should light up the same and in sequence

G is for ground, won't light up with normal cable.

The receiver end shouldn't have G lighting instead of 8, suspect faulty tester.

Thanks for that, I've contacted the seller to get it exchanged. So basically the main unit and the receiver unit should only count down 1-8 in sequence without the G ?

What cable would cause the G light to light by chance ?

One with a metallic ground cable in the wire, which would also need ground metal casing on the RJ45 module

Crazy price. Other cheap models (under £10) seem poor quality in comparison.

Thanks bledd, the first tester you linked to is the one I have, mine has a green label instead of black though. It was purchased off the rainforest site for £3.

I had an e-mail back earlier from the seller apologising about it being faulty and he's looking to investigate the issue, he is sending me another one out free of charge and doesn't want the faulty one back.

Check that the pins aren't crossed when you look down it.. (possible)

It's just a cheap chinese product, you're bound to get some faulty ones.

Damn that is cheap. I think I'll get one, I only get 100mbit to my PC, I think I have a bad connection on one of the rj45 faceplates as everything else connects at 1gbit perfectly.
