Cat D - Would you buy?

a Cat D on these could be the old No front bumper, rear bumper, spoiler and skirts treatment that happens to these right?
Would checking out what actually happened

The car was registered in 2007, it was written off 5 years ago. Do you think a missing front bumper, rear bumper, spoiler and skirts will write a car off that's only a few months old?

depending on if any damage has been done during the removal of those bits it could quite easily run into many many thousands of pounds.

for example a spoiler roughly removed could end up in tailgates and boots needing painted along with a new spoiler same with skirts being removed doors could be damaged along with various bits of paintwork.

factor in replacement of the above bits and a bit of paint and you could easily write a car off thats not that old

As above.

However I didnt check when it was written off it was just a suggestion that sometimes its worth trying to find out with stuff like this.

I remember someone mentioning in the interior stolen thread that their mk4 r32 was written off because the seats were nicked.

heard about that before as well. seen many mk4 r32s being targeted and loosing interiors headlights and kit

Category D

The least damage suffered of the four categories e.g. vehicles replaced under 'new for old' schemes, vehicles written-off to minimise hire charges.

The vehicle can be safely and economically repaired either by the insurer / motor trade or by an enthusiast using cheaper parts and reduced labour costs. The PAV (Pre Accident Value) does not exceed 2,000 ( 1,000 for motorcycles), or for more expensive vehicles, where the engineer's assessed repair costs do not exceed the PAV.

Category C

Substantial damage, but repairable by an repairer or enthusiast.

The vehicle can be safely and economically repaired either by the insurer / motor trade or by an enthusiast using cheaper parts and reduced labour costs. The PAV (Pre Accident Value) exceeds 2,000 ( 1,000 for motorcycles) and the engineer's assessed repair costs exceed the PAV.

Category B

Heavy damage e.g. bent chassis

The vehicle cannot be safely and economically repaired either by the insurer / motor trade or by an enthusiast using cheaper parts and reduced labour costs. However, the vehicle contains economically salvageable parts.

Category A

A 'total loss' e.g. burn-out. The only value is the scrap metal.

The vehicle cannot be safely and economically repaired either by the insurer / motor trade or by an enthusiast using cheaper parts and reduced labour costs and there are no economically salvageable parts.

That was me that mentioned my MK4 R32 being written off due to the interior being stolen. But then the cost of one seat was approx £2000 and I had both front seats, rear seats, door cards and a few other bits. The seats weren't made any more so you could not get replacement parts. The car was worth circa £10k when it happened and was written off. I'm sure it made a good buy for someone who had after market seats to put in it etc. The car was mint and no damage was done other than the lock. I would have bought it back had I the chance or inclination.

I was looking at a Cat D MG TF 3 year old one.... Great price..... Until I read around the MG Forums that the guy who used to own it was killed in the accident..... AM STAYING AWAY FROM THAT PARTICULAR VEHICLE NOW.

I would have thought that would have instantly become a CAT A due to the nature of the crash?

I've managed to track down the previous owner.

He's sold it trade to this D3 motors company at a low price because of the Cat D, he needed the cash. The bloke who bought the car did so under a different company name to D3. Seemed very dodgy apparently

The Cat D was the previous owner to him pulling out at a junction, side collision and purely panel and headlight damage. He took a mechanic friend who checked the car out thoroughly before buying it and after buying it they got it on the ramps and checked it was straight with lasers. Checked for any weld marks or any other signs. As far as damage goes it's fine.

When I spoke to 'D3' he told me it was stage 2 mountune running around 180bhp. This is absolute rubbish, it's got a mountune cold air feed, that's it.

Needless to say I'm staying clear unless I can talk him down to around £3k, which is what it should be worth being a Cat D.

Stop focusing on the damn Mountuotuno performance aspect and how good a CAT D it is. It's still a CAT D car, just buy a straight car from a straight seller.

Who knows what else has been done to it or has gone wrong!

It's not worth the hassle.

For all I knew he was a straight seller which is why I've tracked down the previous owner.

It's way over priced for what it is, D3 are dodgy and should be avoided at all costs and yes, I have gone right off the idea of a Cat D :)

Someone has to buy them :p
