I want to get a cat flap but our utility room door is a UPVC paneled type and i'm not sure the best way to go about it. In a flat panel fine but as the cat flap will span over the panels i'm not sure how to seal it other than liberal application of silicone and i'm worried about it not being weather tight or just looking botched.

This is the door

And this is a close up, the one i'm looking at needs an opening of 167mm so it'd just annoyingly be hanging over both edges :(

Also as one final thing i can't find a microchip catflap anywhere in any colour other than white or brown. As the outside of the door is anthracite grey i'll need to get a can of spray paint to make it look not terrible but that's by the by.

So any advise?

I have fitted a catflap in a door almost identical to yours, sealed it on the outside with mould resistant silicone . It looks a bit pants but gets the job done, no way around it looking a bit odd fitting

If you finish the sealer off nicely with a proper tool like a Fugi it shouldn't be too obtrusive, but the "smeared around with a wet finger" method will probably look gash.

Try and fill most of the gaps with a foam backer, so you aren't having to slap in too much depth of silicon, and it can be finished off pretty tidily.

Have you considered putting it through an external wall instead?

It would be a bit more expensive but you can get it out of sight then but it depends on the layout of the house.

Hmm interesting thanks for the replies all, the thing is the door is in quite a prominent place on the house being the door on the left here so i can't have it looking pants :(

I had thought about putting it through a wall, i've got plenty of options to do that. It's a timber framed house with block outer wall so probably wouldn't be too big of a job. Don't know if you can hire those bore hole type drill bits for doing things like tumble dryer vents in a big enough size from HSS or similar as that could be a nice neat option to do that.

My mate has a catflap going through wall, three cats all have no issue with it, and doesn't effect the security of any doors that way either. Just had a builder remove bricks and make good once catflap fitted.

Cant the cat go out the velux window, down onto the porch roof then the wood store all whilst miaowing the mission impossible tune?

One of our old cats used to go out the small top bathroom window (jump from windowsill to small top window that was normally open), out of that jump down onto roof outside (same height as windowsill) from their onto garage roof (jumping a 1m+ gap), across garage roof, down onto log store roof then onto the lawn.
She used to come back in the same way too.

The other cats would watch her do it, then go and sit by the back door singing until let out.... "Come on monkey, open the door".
