I live in a basement flat and outside my window, there is a deep, about 8 foot drop from the wall and then railings above and road. There is a flat area outside around 4-6 foot deep, about 20 feet across. Tonight I could hear meowing coming from outside. A cat has somehow get his or herself stuck down there. They keep meowing every now and then, sometimes louder and more desperate sounding. I opened my window and put out some food and water and tried to call it in, but it was having none of it.

Now I am feeling worried about it as its a windy and rainy night tonight. There is some shelter there I guess and I should really stop worrying and deal with it in the morning. I may bravely climb down or try squeezing out of my window.

This is about 30 minutes later and I think the cat might be a stray. I saw them trying to jump up and get out and fail. Since then, it has been quiet. I was really rooting for the poor little thing. I have put out food and water and I will have to deal with this in the morning I think. I might try draping towel over the side of the wall and see if it can jump up it and climb out.

I just went out there, the cat would not stand a chance to squeeze through the railing where it was trying to jump up. I just took a towel I dont like very much and tied it to the railings, so it can jump up to and climb out with to a place where there is a wide enough gap in the railings for it to escape. Its still meowing now.

Well, cat and owner are safely reunited. My partner suggested I go on a Facebook group and someone had indeed reported a missing cat last night. The owner was only a few doors up. The Facebook group owner gave me the owner's number and I called him. He arrived a few minutes later and came into my flat. The cat came to the window when he called her. He was able to pick her up and he took her home. She is all safe and sound now, I feel so relieved.

Cute cat. The absolute state of that area though
I could not agree more. People think it's a rubbish tip and throw all sorts down there. It's impossible to get down to sort it out unless you have a couple of ladders. I usually get it sorted a couple of times a year so I'll probably get someone in the new year. As soon as I clear it, someone throws something else down there. Last time it was the sleeping bags you can see. Mostly it's bottles and drink's cans. One year, my upstairs neighbour, who I think is probably in prison now, threw much of his kitchen through the glass of his window above and it landed down there with a loud crash at 3am. He threw out his oven, fridge and microwave. He was evicted shortly after thankfully. My recent ones have been good and considerate.

Good job that I mostly don't see it and don't care.
