Has anybody ever had a cat run over and suffer a broken pelvis? My 8 month old cat suffered it this time last week and is now cage bound for 6 weeks.

Just interested because he is now able to stand up and move a little bit and is itching to get out of the cage, and wont stop bloody meowing. It's so annoying, I'm almost tempted to let him out.

So, has anybody else here had this happen? How did you deal with the cage for 6 weeks?

Sorry to hear that,
you could try a slightly bigger cage so he could move around a bit more, but really he needs to stay put.

I assume you've put him in the living room so he's with people?

If you let him out there is a good chance he'll hurt himself again if he's only just standing up. How to deal with the cage? Think of 6 weeks time when you can put it out the door with a boot up it's arse again. :D

Yeah my cat was a real sod when he was hit by a car. It was a fractured vertebrae but similar in seriousness of injury. As already been said I have him a slightly bigger cage so he could move around more freely.

I know it sucks but ignore the pining they're pretty dumb creatures when it comes to injury he'll be trying to jump on stuff ASAP. Could cause more harm if he injures the same area whilst still healing.

Can you not make the cat a bigger enclosure? If it's stuck in a tiny cage, I can understand its mewing.

Yeah going to look for a bigger cage I think. He is itching to get out bless him.

Vets in the morning so will see how long I have to keep him in it.

That's a pretty fair point. The small cage might be to restrict movement as much as possible.

Did the vet give you the cage? (Well by give I mean charge for it but you get me).

Nope went and bought it. I'm thinking as he gets gradually better, I should let him move around a bit more to strengthen muscles etc... Not enough room for him to move off his bed atm and he keeps lying in his litter tray.

Argh yeah that does sound a bit cruel (not your fault you have to do what's best for him even if it sucks).

Take a picture of him in the cage and show it to the vet see what they think(assuming the cage isn't doubling up as a cat carrier). A company called pets corner used to do cardboard cages with 8 side panels that you could set up into 4,5,6,7,8 sided cages to increase decrease room. £40 I think would be cheaper than metal cages and you could increase his room allowance. (Ill dig up a link if interested).

This is him at the moment.

Bless. I see what you mean about being cramped.

Chicken mesh, cable ties and wire cutters could create a more suitable cage with ease. You can buy it really cheaply.

Not really a D.I.Y'er but it does sound good to do something like that. I've put a post on a local selling Facebook page to see if anybody has a bigger one going cheap. If nothing materializes then will seriously consider it.

Just cut the mesh in the right size and then cable tie it together shouldn't be too hard mate.

Use the radiator as the back panel would give it some strength.

Where abouts are you based? I have the biggest cage most pets shops do. If your remotely close to where I work/live ill drop it off.

Edit: I don't know if you've already done/doing it but have you got a big enough cover for the cage? Might relax him more to be in darkness.

I live in Hereford mate. Never thought about a cover, would that help you rekon?

yeah when our cat was serioulsly ill we put a large towel over the top and one side of the cage, didn't block out light and he still had 3 sides to look out of but seemed to comfort him more.

Being in pain he probably would like the relative dark area

Argh :( 140mile round trip from my closest point sorry.

It should encourage him to go to sleep. I've always covered my cat when he's in a cage or going to the vets seems to chill him out somewhat. Fingers crossed it helps yours as well.

Thanks guys, will try and cover him a bit until I can get my hands on another cage. Will see what the vet says tomorrow.
