Cat6a wiring...

hi, I have a small run of cat6a going through a concrete wall. My problem is it terminates into a surface mounted RJ45 plate, I'm not particularly experienced with this stuff but I cannot get it bend or connect satisfactorily. I can make the connections fine but the plate will not push back into place without kinking the wire or putting strain on the connections even with ties its too much force. I have resorted to stripping the outer sleeving off but maintaing the twisted pairs into the connections. To my knowledge on electrics the twists are cancelling out the interference but everywhere I read it says no more than 0.5 inch of sleeving should be removed... I don't fully understand this part as the wires are still twisted tight up to the connections. I understand that the cable is overated and I should have just got the cat6 and not cat6a so will just rerun if needs be but if anyone could confirm if this is fine for a wall plate connection that would be great.

Does it need to be certified? If not and you're just using for Gigabit then you'll almost certainly get away with stripping more of the outer sheath.

Otherwise use a deeper backing box or find a faceplate that allows you route the cable in the way you need.

hey, no it doesn't. Just a diy task in a flat for gigabit. Not used cat6 before specially not cat6a and the internet was a wash with information saying make sure its no more than 0.5 inch like the cable would become completely useless or something so really just wanted to clear that up.

I doubt I will find a box suitable, one end comes through the side of the box and the bedroom end comes straight into the box in the centre hole looking right at the connection so it just tries to push back into the wall which then pops out of the trunking the other side :(.

I'm using full size surface mounted boxes and there is no way in hell is this cable bending around inside the box. busted a tie clip on the first attempt and have had to chisel the wall so it can make the bend into the trunking... pita.

I'm still like Cat5e, fine for Gigabit and easy to work with. I do usually install Cat6 nowadays but it can be a pain. In the SME area I work in I've never even seriously considered using Cat6a.

I'd grab a length of Cat5e and install that. Once it's hidden inside the trunking you'll never be able to tell the difference for most things. If you wan to feel a bit better about it use Cat6.

If it's a reasonably sort length I'll post you some (Cat5e or Cat6) if you cover the postage. Stick a MM Wanted request in and point me in the right direction.

I know it was overkill, I just assumed cat6a was like cat 5 size with foil wrap. its running near mains but in a separate trunking 50mm gap etc so thought the shielding would benefit. when it turned up and I tried to install it I realised my mistake :). thanks for the offer, wish I had just gone for the 5e or standard 6 now but its all in and wired so if it work with 3 inch tails either end the distance is 7 metre double run lol.
