Great, my first ever ATI card (Powercolor 4870) and I get this error message on startup, or when I run the CCC:

"catalyst control centre: host application has stopped working"

I initially tried the full CCC + Driver package, and got this, and now the separate CCC & Driver installations are doing the same. I used DriverSweeper in safe mode and CCleaner to remove the nVidia drivers, and also when re-installing the separate CCC and driver sets...

Any ideas anyone? Do I have to use CCC, and does it have to run in the background all the time? Sorry for the N00bish question, but I only know nVidia until today...

Thanks...

Have you flashed your 4850 with a modded bios?

I've been having a hard time installing the 8.8s on my system, I had to find a stock bios and reflash it.

It's a 4870 - but no, totally stock, out of the box. It seems it has trouble loading as a startup program more than manually starting it. I've left CCC running all night and it was OK, wierd.

I get it on the odd occasion, just restart it in all programs, all is then fine.
OK, maybe just new card paranoia!

I have had the card's fan spin up to what must be 100% for a second a few times, like just now - whilst installing my free copy of GRID... makes me jump!

Is this normal?

My friend has two 4870s and they done this (Vista x64) until he stuck them under watercooling. My 4870 does this but only during POST. In windows (XP) it's fine. I don't use CCC though. Just the 8.8 display driver and ATI Tray Tools (V1.5.8.1260) which has fan control and overclocking options that work perfectly for me.

i had this with the gainward fan control tool installed

stopped the gainward software running at startup fixed the issue.
