Catalyst drivers all lead to BSOD

I'm running what is now a rather old card - the X600XT from Asus. That doesn't excuse quite how poorly it is running, however, so I've tried to update the drivers.

Sadly, any driver except the original one from that came with the card, leads to a Blue Screen of Death as soon as I do anything as challenging as trying to change the screen resolution. The error always points to what I believe is the main driver: atidvag.dll

I'd like to use a newish driver, but having tried a few alternatives (ATI 6-11 and 6-12 as well as ASUS 8.282.1 from back in June) I can't make any of them work.

I've done all of the preparation that I can (http://www.tweakguides.com/ATICAT_4.html) apart from the registry cleaning bit.

Any ideas, anyone? I'd like to avoid reinstalling XP if I can help it.

Thanks in advance.

I had similar problem when i got my x800xt. Eventually i opened up the computer and re-sitting all of the components and then a fresh install of XP with the newest drivers. Then i made sure that i had my AGP/PCI lock on at 66/33 and the CPU and RAM had plenty of volts. Not happened since. :)

I think you could be right - a reinstall of Windows may be the first thing to try. A lot of stuff has gone onto and come off my drive over the last 18 months.

I'm not sure what the PCI/AGP lock is. My X600 is PCI express, so maybe it doesn't apply.

Think I won't mess with the voltages except as a final option. Not really my area of expertise, and I'd hate to burn up the card. That said, I think my CoolerMaster iGreen 430W PSU and AG8 3rd Eye motherboard should give me the options to do whatever I might need to in that direction, if needs be.
