I am trying to (unsuccessfully) update my kids pc with the latest catalyst drivers.
I am no expert with ati, as I've always had nvidia, but when their 6800 ultra went a couple of months ago, the x1950GT AGP was the best value for what I wanted to spend.
Anyway, they have xp pro, and have had 7.6's on for a while, so i decided to update to the new 7.8's last night - bad idea
I used the ATI uninstall utility, then rebooted into safe mode, then ran the guru3d driver sweeper, then rebooted, and then installed the 7.8's.
The first two times I tried this, it came up with an error message during the CCC install, saying something about windows installer already being used. It still said that I needed to restart, but when I did, the resolution was 640x480, and the colours were at the lowest possible setting.
The third time, it seemed to work ok. Anway, they didn't use it after that last night so I thought all was ok. Then they phone me at work this morning telling me that the resolution is "massive" and the colours are not right.
I did have ati tool running, but after the first two attempts, I disabled it (removed it from startup).
What am I doing wrong? And how do I sort it out
