Catalyst's GPU clock values regularly changing, 240, 500, 870MHz, normal?

Thanks for taking the time.

Hi, just a quick question I couldn't find any information about from searching, as it presented that of overclocking.

My new HD 4890 card's GPU clock values are changing from 240, 500, and 870MHz in the Catalyst software, is this a normal change that depends on how much it needs? When activity is listed as 0% it still changes.

Also, when I manually adjust the fan to 20% speed, it intermittently speeds up for about a second during gaming which is quite annoying. Should I just leave it in automatic mode? This isn't a major concern, but hey, as there might be a quick fix from software perhaps, I though it worth asking.

Appreciated.

I suspect its lower its clocks automatically so you use less power, generate less heat when there is less demand. Is it causing problems?

add to that fan generates less noise

Would go with that; happens with my 4870

84% activity (folding)

GPU: 780mhz

0% Activity (pause folding)

GPU drops to 600mhz

Its powerplay, when in idle mode it drops the clocks down low, when in 2D mode it has them dropped a little and when running in full 3D it will use normal clocks
