Catalytic Converter

Oh undoubtedly as the garage will have their own markup. But if he's not booked in, it might be worth buying the part and paying a local indie 20 quid to stick it on

Until he realises the 3rd party supplies often need fitting kits for the pugs, usually the piece that joins the cat to the back box.

These normally never fit properly, we gave up with euro car parts exhausts a while ago.

Unless you plan on selling the car in a year, buy a decent cat as the cheap ones tend to last a couple of years tops.

I think the 206 uses the close coupled CAT like the later 106/ Saxo? I paid £80 for one those IIRC - won't last anywhere near as long as a genuine PSA one though. Get your old one weighed in - got £15 for ours. :)

I'd say it's pretty much a case of you get what you pay for with this particular component. A cheap third party one will only set you back around £80-120, but it'll probably only last you a couple of years tops. A genuine Peugeot cat will set you back noticeably more (around £320 from a dealership last I checked), but provided the car is running correctly it will also last for considerably longer.

If you did go for a genuine part then it would probably be advisable to check the condition of the lambdas at the same time - if they're particularly old and/or not as responsive anymore, they could reduce the lifespan of any new cat fitted. No point forking out for a better unit if it's just going to get ruined quickly anyway.

I had new back box, middle and front section exhaust fitted to my 206 couple of months ago for £135 at a local inde garage. He did say that my cat was still in tip top condition wise the bill would have come to £300+ if he had to replace that too.
