Categorising / storing photos software (free?)

Hi all,

Is there a software package for categorising and storing photos?

Ideally I would like it to:

* be able to name the files in cronological order (many of my photos don't have a datestamp in the filename, so can the software pick up the date from any hidden file properties?)
* be able to apply categories to images ie kids, cars, holidays etc
* be able to browse photos either by date order or filter by categories
* have automated backup capabilities, preferrably to the cloud.

Anyone use anything? Free software would be preferred but would pay for a functionally strong package.
