Category S econonimcal write off

well we will see next year when the insurance is due.....
Now this IS where insurance companies can get you. In theory, your renewal should now include a non fault accident against you. This most likely WILL put your insurance up.

You can then move to another provider and not declare it, reducing your cost, but you will 100% be declaring insurance fraud and if you have an accident, will not be insured.

If your current insurance doesn't list a non fault accident on the paperwork at renewal, it's YOUR responsibility to tell them, or again, you're committing insurance fraud as there's a clause that says "no accidents in last 5 years" you will be agreeing to.

I had my wing mirror swiped off by some humpty that nearly head on killed us both at 60 mph and my insurance went up enough to replace that wing mirror 4 times over in the next 5 years. I made sure we went through the insurance though as I wanted it repairing properly and didn't want to be caught out further down the line, for any reason.

Edit: And I kid you not, I'd left work earlier to attend my Aunt's funeral and nearly ended up creating my own! (Through no fault of my own)

i think your laying too much credance in cat s /n.
on a 2000 pound car it will make little of no difference even if you sell it on. i would take the money and either repair it or not. as for 417 for the vehicle well it doesnt seem too bad . maybe you could squeeze a little more maybe not.
from the insurance point of view as stated its easier to just catorgorise and pay out, the car is too old for them to repair. ive worked for insurance repair bodyshops where the insurance has gone down rabbit holes of repairing a vehicle that seemed straight forward and cost loads more in the end with trim and hidden damage.
father in law had a previous focus repaired by a third party insurer when its policy holder pulled out of a gateway with a tractor and put a gouge down the side of the focus.
it looked on the face of it as possible 2 door skins and repairs to wing and rear wing plus paint. total cost when we picked it up 2 weeks later was nearly 3grand to insurance. they did give him a nice new 1 series bmw as a loan car no doubt on the bill as well (he never used it other than when we drove it to pick his car up).
but bear in mind we bought the focus for him 8 months previous and only paid 3800 for it so go figure the repair should have been a write off but nope.

even though i stated numerous times that i was driving the vehicle, not once did i ever state my car was parked, you made that assumption all by yourself.

Also you stated above you worked for a Personal Insurance company.

No, learn to read seriously.
Actually learn to post clearly understandable English also ;)

"I was part of implementing the new system for personal insurance for one of the largest insurers in the UK"
Is not I was working for a Personal Insurance company

Vauxhall Insignia Estate... not that it matters
is this the 2015 insignia? i may have picked it up wrong from another thread so apologise if i have.
if so yes the value is low but by the same score i nearly bought one about 3 months ago from auto trader with a dented rear quarter for 1500 so at 417 its not bad buyback.
that was cat s and the guy was selling as is apply for document and hadnt repaired it tbh it was dented but not vehicle off the road type dented.

look on auto trader and use the filters to get a nearest match to your mileage /fuel /trim etc then save them or print them off. i did this with daughters first vehicle and just sent them to her insurance company when they lowballed her got the offer up 500 quid.
every penny counts

from

quite a difference

35k to 125k miles so you would expect so

125k is basically a significant failure/repair away from scrap heap

Edit more confused now as reading back it seems they have offered roughly £1700 as their settlement with him retaining ownership.
(£2100 - 400 = 1700 in rough numbers)

So unless its a super high spec and super low mileage that seems the most obvious way to go.
Take the money, accept the cat S marker and reduced value.
Seeing as hes seemingly willingly looking to accept the car with damage but walk away with no claim unless the value is going to go down by more than £1700 its a case of take the money and run.
And probably not even get the dent fixed.

without being pedantic.........i dont know the mileage or trim level or even year thats why i gave the broad values. and if 125k is basically not far off the scrap heap ive done well for most of my life as this last car is one of the few that has less than 100k on it :) my last car a mondeo was sold with 147k on it and i still service it for the young couple who bought it and now has nearly 200k on it.
my previous peugeot 407 estate had nearly 160k on it as am reliabley informed is still private hire in nottingham area.

Yeah I know and with your background a car that for most wouldn't be worth the risk of a repair is worth it.
I did say significant. As in something like the turbo nuking itself or the auto box etc.
