I'm flying out to Ireland for a short trip. On Tuesday i'll be coming back to Biggin Hill.

Caterham is just around the corner and my colleague and I intend on heading over there for a look after we land.

I've never been into Caterhams', I know what they looks like and that's about it. Open top, funky, fast things. Is there a specific model that is good for a test drive? DO they even allow test drives? Do they even go on the normal roads?

Tell me what to expect, i'd hate to waste the time there by being completely oblivious.

I assume by Caterham you mean the sales outlet. The actual factory (well more of an assembly shop) is in Dartford.

They may well have a demonstrator available, if not they will probably give you a passenger ride.

I think it is highly unlikely that someone turning up off the street will be allowed out in one on his own unless his is known, can demonstrate he knows the cars and has owned such cars and talks with confidence about the models, or turns up in something that may be associated with a Caterham owner. However, I'd aim for an R400 which nails it pretty much smack on in terms of the Caterham experience, and maybe a CSR.

I spent a Saturday morning driving a whole range of them about 12 years back at their dealer in Gloucestershire (can't remember where) and he simply looked at me, asked if the nice 328 I had pitched up in was mine and then prepared them and let me take them out with my wife in the passenger seat!

I suspect the main dealer dan saff might be somewhat more circumspect especially if you know nowt about them..
