This is what happens when one of those scammers calls and says your computer has errors. I played along with an old computer and let him lock it down.

Has anyone had a scammer call saying your computer was infected? I haven't, but I have had lots of calls in the past at the family home claiming to be from talk talk :p ( Haven't been on that isp for years )

My uncle got caught out. Luckily I was round at the time and took him a brew up and overheard the conversation.

The cheeky gits called back though a few days later. He told them he had a crime number and would be calling the police again...Not that, that would worry them they are usually offshore callers

I have recently. Kept them on the phone 45 minutes. Got a fab recording but can't upload due to my works stationary being all over the desk unfortunately.

It was really odd though as they called back a week later, and we had a laugh about them calling me again - He remembered me from the things I was doing (playing phonejacker videos down the phone at them etc) and then had a chat about how much they get paid per connection, how they have targets etc - 3 Connections a day - If they hit it they get paid 300 rupee and then more for anything over 3. Less and they are paid nothing.

I told him to get a real job to stop scamming. He wants to be an air conditioning engineer and move to the UK. It was all very odd.

The first guy was "Steve" who then hands off to the senior technician "Alex". It was Alex who I had the above conversation with. I think I am a bit notorious in their office given the laughs when they said they had called "George Agdgdgwngo" - I gave him this as my name and told him to add me on Facebook - Which he went off to do!

Wasted some time, but at least someone else wasn't being scammed.

Meh if I'm not busy I quite enjoy stringing them along. If I can waste their time hopefully it'll prevent someone else getting scammed.

My favourite was around 20 minutes of various checking and showing me all my viruses and me agreeing before asking them if I should have turned my pc on or not before all this. No idea what he said but he wasn't happy.

Another one threatened me with a mail bomb after quite politely asking them to remove my nans details from their database.

Had them many times in the past, every one being from some Indian call centre. Had one the day before yesterday funnily enough - the first time in many months. I used to do the odd wise-crack comment or wind-up down the line but it got boring very quickly, so the last few have had a loud expletive or two in their ears instead. A few years back I let one of them 'take control' of my main system but they were useless, like I knew they would be. One safe boot scan with combofix while he and his supervisor held the line later and they cut off, but not before I glibly mentioned, "Well now, that seems to have ****** on your chips somewhat. Thank you, come again"

Personally I'd love to have a loud squeel or ear piercing sounds go through the phone into their ear piece :D

As bad as it sounds, any Indian sounding voice on the other end is an instant hang-up from me. And I've told Mum to do the same thing. Which she does, thankfully, after lots of persuasion (because she doesn't like being rude).

Congrats, scammers, you've given all Indians a bad name, and made us prejudiced against anyone who sounds Indian.

On the rare occasion (and its very rare) i find myself bored enough or am already expecting a legit call i make a point of impersonating the local kebab shop to see what the response is, makes scammers hang up no end.

Other variations i've heard are "hello you've reached the police non emergency line" and "this is a government line, how did you get this number?" Followed by a 10s pause and "never mind see you in 10 minutes"

how do you deal with al lthe comapnies with idian call centers?

I few years ago I had a couple of callers claiming to be Microsoft. I kept them on the phone for ages and said I wasn't giving them anything unless they gave me their address and phone number, they refused :D

But yea, same for me. Foreign caller = automatically hang up these days. I also tend to avoid companies without UK call centers as well. Too many times I've phoned up someone's support and just couldn't tell what the hell they were on about.

If I am phoning them it is a different matter (EG BT). but if they are phoning me. Foreign Accent=instant hang up.

This too. Sometimes they are utterly incomprehensible. One would have thought that clear spoken English would be a fairly high priority job requirement for somebody working in a call centre serving UK (And other English speaking countries) customers.

Personally I would expect RP, or something very close to it (Even British regional accents can be hard to follow sometimes, even today)

Bring back BBC English..:p (The whole point of which is that, even though very few people actually spoke it, everybody could understand it, from the highlands of Scotland, the valleys of Wales, the Flats of Norfolk and the SW tip of Cornwall...)

They've rung my mum once but she quickly dismissed the call and said she'd get her son to check it over as he worked in IT, Not had a call since.

Some of the videos on youtube that they set up for with linux or vm pushing files back to the scammers can be amusing at times.

Was that video actually yours? The guy sounded American.

This is why I used to avoid Northern English companies, incomprehensible call centre staff.
